My eyes slowly fluttered opened and shut after being exposed to the somewhat bright sky. Water droplets lay on my face and continued to fall steadily upon it. I glance up without lifting me head and see slightly tall buildings and street lights, the sky was a blanket of gloom. Now, actually sitting up, I rubbed the back of my head and stretch the sore parts.
Where am I? That's the thought that lingered in my mind. It was almost night and here I was sitting on the middle of what seems to be a sidewalk in light drizzling rain.
I glance down to my abdomen and notice red liquid was seeping out and mixing into the puddles.Blood? How was I injured, I don't remember anything at all. A small bell noise from a building away ringed and footsteps came closer to me. I slowly lift my head to see what's approaching but apparently my vision was blurry.
"Ah! Are you alright, y-you're bleeding. Here I'll help you up," A frail voice said and offered his hand, whilst I was just staring at. "Are you in shock? Oh geez...uh...I'll get the manager," the person ran back inside while I just continued sitting here.
I glanced at my mysterious wound and realize it was a big gash, but I wasn't in immense pain or anything, so my body must be experiencing shock.
The bell door opened again and two pairs of feet approached me and started lifting me up, and placing me upon their back. I was confused but felt happy someone was helping me out, it's a nice feeling.
"Be careful, Touka, there's a big cut on his waist..." the same voice from before came behind from me, the girl carrying me just clicked her tongue. The door opened and the bell rang a sweet tune and they placed me right there in the floor, a towel already placed.
"Is he a ghoul?" The frail voice kept asking questions. Are they referring to me?
"He sure looks like it, see his wound? Look closely, it may still be a big wound but the cells are regenerating slowly," the female voice said and dabbed my forehead with a towel, wiping the rain away.
Regeneration? Ghoul? These terms are unfamiliar to me , unless those were the vocabulary I've forgotten.
"What's a ghoul?" I managed to stutter out, my own voice surprising me as I haven't heard it in what seems forever. The two people caring for me stopped in their tracks, looking at me with somewhat shocked eyes.
"You don't know what your own body is? First of all, how'd you get hurt," the girl spat and stopped cleaning my forehead. I slowly sat up with the strength I had and leaned against the wall of the Building I was placed in.
"I- uh... I'm not sure," I said and looked at the faces, still blurred. Is my vision also damaged, or was it an after effect.
"Memory loss?" The boy asked and kneeled down near my face. I squinted and tried to make out the facial features, but all I saw was short black hair and some kind of material covering his left eye.
"I assume so...I don't remember anything that happened before waking up...." I said and looked around to see the girl that carried me, her indigo hair standing out.
"Not even your name?" The girl, which the boy called them Touka, asked with some annoyance in her tone. I shook my head a no.
"I was even surprised at my own voice, hence my appearance as well," I sighed and buried my face in my knees and arms. A soft arm rested oh my shoulder, resulting me to look up again.
The boy was gentle and probably smiled, I couldn't tell.
"It's alright, we'll help you remember your name," he said and took his hand off again. "But first, that wound on your waist, it's very big and if we leave it untreated you might pass out from blood loss," he stood up and grabbed Touka, whispering to her. She sighed and nodded, also standing up and walking away to a counter.
"We're going to test something out, it's nothing dangerous so don't freak out," the boy said and also went behind the counter, some clanking noises echoed. The clanking stopped after a while, and the boy came over with a mug and a platter, placing it on the floor and sitting down.
"Here's some fresh coffee," he said and nudged the tray towards me, I glance down and see black liquid in the mug with steam flowing from it.
I slowly grab it and was greeted with a warm but no too hot handle and brought it closer to my lips, taking a sip. It burned a little but I continued taking small sips and then placed it back down onto the platter.
"It's bitter," I said and tried to get the taste out.
"Well, ghouls can only drink coffee and if I tried adding sugar or cream it wouldn't be pleasant," he said scratching his cheek. I tilt my head in confusion. I've remembered the word sugar and eaten it before, why would it taste bad?
"I want to try it," I said trying not to be demanding. The boy flinched but nodded and went behind the counter again and grabbed a small cup of white liquid and sugar.
He poured it in for me, slowly so it didn't overflow the cup and I thanked him. Lifting the cup, I brought it to my lips once more and took a sip, a sweet and creamy texture with a tint of coffee filled my mouth and I chugged the whole thing down.
The boy looked at my shocked and started at me as if expecting a certain response.
"You're not disgusted at all?" He asked and tried some cream, and scrunched up his nose. "It taste like rotten yogurt left under the sun for a year," he muttered and grabbed the empty dishes placing them in the sink.
"It tasted normal and sweet to me," I bluntly said and tilt my head once more. The boy sighed and placed his hand on his cheek and thought.
"Are you human or ghoul....."
