Full title: Canada x Insecure!Reader - Ran Out Of Time
You saw him falling in love with her. You kept a close eye on Matthew’s wristband that dictated almost everyone’s lives. It slowly ticked down to the end. He only had ten minutes left, and you saw how happy he looked just talking to her. You had ten minutes as well, but you had no one to talk to and no way to look as happy. Your eyes flickered to your wristband and back to his; your times were identical, but you couldn’t exactly tell because of the goddamn human impulse to blink.
Surely, sweat was beading on your forehead. You could feel it as the sound of his voice stood out from the background noise of everyone else’s. Their conversation was almost deafening. Of course it was, they were conversing right next to you. You just fidgeted, sating at your book. You couldn’t read, and you couldn’t concentrate. You looked at your wristband. Seven minutes, it read. Had they been talking, and you sitting there just staring at pages with useless words on them, for three minutes?
You looked at his face, as you sat on the other side of her, and you saw that half smile that you always loved. His eyes shifted then, towards you, and you locked eyes for a split second. You felt your heart jump into your throat and sting with pain at the same time. Then he looked away, and you quickly went back to stare at page 103. But as you used your hand to hold down the previous pages, you caught a glimpse of your wristband.
Five minutes. Another two minutes had passed.
A feeling in your stomach had grown as the minutes lurched on. You felt sick, like you were going to throw up then and there, but you held it in. This was not the time to throw up; you were going to meet your soulmate in…two minutes… Your stomach dropped, and the feeling that grew in it worsened.
You looked around in search of someone that was approaching you. But no one. No one was coming your way. Your once wide, frantic eyes closed. The stinging sensation of new tears caused you to close your eyes and your hands to clench into fists. You were afraid. Incredibly afraid.
Then you heard your name said in the voice you hoped one day would. You looked to your left, seeing Matthew with worry written across his face. “Are you all right? You look sick,” he commented with the most sincere worry.
This is the time to be honest, you thought, so you took a look at your wristband and he did the same. You pursed your lips, eyebrows slanted down and outward, and shook your head no. Of course you weren’t okay. He was about to find out that that girl he was talking to… You finally noticed that she wasn’t there, separating the both of you from each other, and that it was just the two of you.
“What happened to Alice?” You asked, moving the subject from yourself.
He sighed. “She had to go. Besides, I saw her wristband, and it was nowhere near mine.” He looked at his wrist again. “Sixty seconds.”
You looked at mine once more, and it was the same. Sixty seconds and counting. You must’ve grown pale because he asked if you were okay again.
“A minute, too, huh? Don’t worry, I’m nervous, too,” he smiled again to comfort you.
“Wait, so you just let her go?” You asked, not only curious but also wanting to keep the conversation as long as you can get it to be.
“‘Course! She probably wasn’t my soulmate anyway,” he sighed again, looking down at his lap.
Comfort him now, you mentally told yourself. You put a hand on his shoulder. “Your soulmate’s probably going to be so much better than her. So much better,” you smiled, and he grinned.
“Probably!”
You removed your hand and checked the damned wristband another time, almost on impulse. He did the same mumbling, “Damn this thing.”
“Five,” you whispered with a crack in your voice.
“Four,” he followed suit.
You looked at him. “Three.”
He looked at you. His eyes were shining, surprisingly. You were probably close to tears. “Two,” he almost shouted.
“O-one.” You could barely say the word, clasping your hands over your mouth to muffle any sobs that escaped through your lips afterwards.
He looked at you, blank-faced, and you shut your eyes tightly. You ran out of time. Where was he? An arm snaked around your abdomen suddenly, and your eyes shot open. You were staring into the join of Matthew’s neck and shoulders.
“Why are you crying?” He breathed for you to hear.
You hiccuped. “Because I didn’t meet him.”
“Did you not?” He released you, and instead, held both of your shoulders. “Did you really not?”
You hesitated. Was he trying to say what you thought he was trying to say? You didn’t realize you were holding in your breath until you felt a pair of soft lips press against your cheek, and you were holding in another breath. You let it go once you saw dots lining the edges of your sight, almost collapsing onto him once you began to gasp for air.
“Do you really refuse to believe it’s me?” He inquired, hurt.
Your heart suddenly cracked at the sight of him frowning and his eyes full of sadness. “It’s not that I refuse to believe it’s you,” you paused. “It’s just I refuse to believe I’m your soulmate.”
That beautiful, subtle smile returned to his face, and he took a lock of your hair in between his fingers. “Well, you’re going to need to start believing because you’re mine and I’m yours.”
You felt your face heat up, and you couldn’t help but smile upon hearing him say those words; it was something you only dreamt of until that moment. You leaned in toward him and wrapped your arms around him.
“Are you really mine?” You asked, still a little doubtful.
“Of course. We both ran out of time at the same time, right?” He chuckled. “And you’re right, by the way. My soulmate’s a lot better than Alice.”
