Chapter 27

Suppressed fear

That night we went out for dinner after the event. EJ came too, accompanied by her father. It started out as a very awkward dinner but as the night went on everyone relaxed and it ended up being quite fun.

"Can Lance stay with us?" EJ asked her dad as everyone exited the restaurant. The tall man looked over at Dad who nodded slightly and smiled "If he wants" Andrew said and EJ beamed "Yes!" She said. I grinned as well "Brilliant" I said and I got into their car instead of the cabs we had come in.

Once we got to their house EJ showed me the guest room and told me where the loo was "See you in the morning!" She said and left for her room "Yeah" I said and closed the door once she left. I kicked off my shoes and socks and set them in a corner, I took off my jacket and hung it over the desk chair, and finally, I pulled off my shirt and lay down on my back in the bed after taking off my glasses and setting them on a table. I closed my eyes and was immediately met by the dark waves of sleep.

"Simon!" I yelled and ran towards him to push him out of the road. The car slammed into me and I felt the pain sear through my entire being. As the car drove away I collapsed onto the ground. "Simon" I said weakly and heard him racing over "Uncle Simon...safe." I said before falling out of the world.

BANG!

I woke up in a cold sweat when I heard a loud noise. It sounded like a car back firing and I slowed down my breathing. I hadn't had a dream about the accident since a few weeks after it had happened. I jerked my head around when I heard a scream "EJ" I gasped and ran towards her room, not thinking to grab my shirt or glasses. I wrenched open the door of her room and revealed the dark haired teen curled up in a ball on her bed and shaking with tears "EJ" I breathed and sat down next to her "What's wrong?" I said quietly and placed a hand on her pyjama clad back "T-the car" she sobbed out "It...it scared me. Reminded me of...of" she never finished the sentence because I hugged her tight. "It's okay" I whispered as she sobbed into my bare shoulder "Nothing's going to hurt you" I felt her nod and uncoil from the tight ball she was in. I started to stand up to leave but she pulled me back onto the bed "C-can you stay here? Please." She said "Of course" I said and lied down on the end of the bed and she curled up next to me. I exhaled heavily and placed my arm around her "It's okay" I said again and placed a kiss on her forehead before closing my eyes again.

When I woke up as the sun beat down on my chest through the slits in the blinds. I looked over and saw the blurred shape of EJ shift on the bed. I slowly rose from the bed and dashed off to my room before she woke up. I dressed in my clothes from yesterday and shoved my glasses onto my face. I headed for the door but it opened before I reached it, EJ was standing on the other side "Can I talk to you?" She said and I nodded "Step into my office" I said and smiled as she entered the room and sunk onto the bed. "What do you want to talk about?" I asked and sat beside her "What woke you up yesterday?" She said and looked at me, I could see her lovely eyes better since they weren't behind her glasses "The car and your scream mostly" I said "What else?" "Bad dream" I said "The important question is: Why did you scream when that car backfired?" I looked at her and saw her discomfort in her expression "It just reminded me of something" she mumbled. "What would that be?" I asked, it took her a few moments to answer but eventually she started to talk "When I was 13,

Dad was working on a murder case that was to do with a serial killer. I...I was...he...he kidnapped me. When the good people found me the killer took out a gun and...and he shot me. It wasn't fatal, only in the shoulder, but I'm still frightened by loud noises, and have bad dreams." it wasn't exactly what I was expecting and was taken aback by the story but reacted quickly. "I'm sorry" I said quietly and put my arm around her and kissed her head "If anyone does that I'll personally jump in front of you." I said and she smiled at me and said "Thanks. I'll remember that."

I'd be going home soon, but while I was here I was determind to enjoy it while it lasted.

This was a interesting chapter. I hope you like it anyway.
