Maria woke to the beautiful, sweet melodic call of a blue-jay. Golden sunlight filtered into her room. She smiled, already in a good mood. Today would be my day, she thought. Nothing bad would happen! Maybe I'll even get Tommy to meep off... Who knows? It truly was a wonderful day. The sun was shining, the birds are singing, Ethan is dead-

"WHAT?" she screamed out loud. Without a second thought, she rushed over to her cherished, beloved hamster. He lay motionless at the bottom of his cage.

Her heart nearly stopped.

This was a kind of pain that she wasn't used to.

Maria had felt alone for most of her life. Maria's mother used to be devoted and cheerful. Six years ago, she found out that she had a strange disease and was told that it had started to affect her brain. She used to be a chef, but after she'd gotten sick, she was fired and was unemployed ever since. Her dad was usually busy. He used to play with Maria and her toy cars, or Mark and his dolls, but now he had no time. He was always at work. Neither of them seemed to really care about her... She'd even overheard them talking about a divorce.

Mark and Maria were somewhat distant. They spoke sometimes, but the two of them had never really connected on anything besides makeup.

There were only a few people who had ever really reached out to her. Their older brother was always so kind to Maria, and they shared so many interests. Sports, music, violence, scissors... But then he had gotten himself into prison.

And then there was Ethan. He knew her like the back of his hand. The two of them seemed to share everything together, except reality. But Maria felt that she had moved on from boys, because she had her treasured hamster... Ethan... He was gone, and she was alone again...

Maria couldn't stop the tears from falling; they flowed freely down her face without a trace of shame. It felt as if her newly-healed heart was broken again. Everyone thought she was tough, but on the inside she was fragile.

At school, Maria was miserable. No one knew what was wrong, so most people stayed away from her. Tommy, completely oblivious, tried to give her a squidge. Maria threw it back at him. She ignored her friends when they said she was going mad, and spent the day in depression.

Finally at home, she went to her room and took out an old shoebox. Taking Ethan, she gave him one last loving glance and put him in the box with a few woodchips and some fresh lettuce. She vowed to replace the lettuce every single week, until the day she died.

Her parents never noticed anything. Candace gave her a worried glance, and Mark looked distressed, offering her some vanilla-cinnamon lipgloss. She ignored them. Why would they care? They didn't understand her. They couldn't feel her pain. Hiding under the covers, she let the darkness take her.
