Untouchable Mistake

Shimura Danzō is having a very, very bad day. Then again, he can't remember if any day in the past few months can even remotely be passable as neutral. He's even more sour and bitter than usual, more demanding and less forgiving. And the source of his foul mood?

A mistake named Uchiha Ren.

Itachi was to kill them all. All, except for Sasuke, and yet, here she is, running around like a carefree kid pretending to be a ninja. He should have removed her when she was still bedridden-

If he had known she'd survived to begin with. But no, Hiruzen has been growing wary of him. If anything, the fool suspects that Danzo had actually had a part in the Massacre – and this is why he kept Uchiha Ren under such tight protection. To the point he allows her to live in his estate, even.

No problem, Danzō had thought then. She would be taken care of when she's inevitably left on her own.

Except, he had miscalculated.

He should've grown wary when she'd started spending time with the Inuzuka heir, but had written it off as a need to socialize. Pathetic, he'd thought then. But afterwards, the heir's younger brother came to play. Then, the Kyuubi vessel. And the Nara, Akimichi, Aburame, and Hyūga heirs – even Hound and Tenzō, two of the most capable ANBU the village had, and Genma, one of the most efficient assassins in recent years, perhaps in history.

Before long, Uchiha Ren had become surrounded by people – clan heirs – who would surely notice if she suddenly went missing. Who would not only notice, but investigate. From a mere pebble on his path, to a full-blown roadblock. One he can't get rid of. Inuzuka Tsume seems to share her children's sentiments, and Hyūga Hiashi acts contemptuous, as always, but his not forbidding his daughter to spend time with the Uchiha is equivalent to open agreement. Nara Shikaku finds the girl quite interesting, if brash, and Akimichi Chōza, on behalf of his son, is very much capable of praising her to the heavens.

And Aburame Shibi. The leader of her team. Oh how she makes his blood boil – but even he seems to have, in his Aburame way, developed a fondness for her.

And suddenly, the nobody that Uchiha Ren should have been had become Uchiha Matriarch, the Clan Head with her own place at the council. With much more influence – even if it's influence from the future – than she should have had. Ever.

And Shimura Danzō can't do anything about her because of it. Because that would raise questions. Too many questions being asked by too attentive people, which would in turn lead to too many things coming to light. Things that must remain in the dark.

Shimura Danzō hates the nuisance that is Uchiha Ren. The nuisance that had caught him talking to Aburame Torune and Shibi, and, somehow, since the very next day every single Aburame seems to know him. Not only know, but consider him a threat. And he, of all people, knows when someone sees him as a threat.

Shimura Danzō hates the nuisance that is Uchiha Ren, and she is proving to be untouchable to him by almost all means.

He can only hope that any 'mishaps' he plans to orchestrate during her future missions will lead to a tragic accident. He smirks to himself. Yes, that would be good.

(He doesn't notice the small Jorō Spider perched in the corner of his office. He never does – insects are insects, and they're noticed only if they have chakra, like the Aburame insects. And thus, the spider slides soundlessly down the wall and, through a crack in the wall, vanishes without being noticed, as only a spider or perhaps a cat could.)

Uchiha Ren allows her face to warp into an expression with too much teeth to be a smile, as she gently strokes the back of a small Jorō Spider perched on her shoulder. With how the creature is positioned – its legs on her head, and its head near her ear – one might think that the spider is whispering secrets to her.

But alas, it is but a spider. What can it do anyway?

(If asked later, Ren would claim that spiders do, in fact, whisper her secrets – and nobody would believe her. Because, silly, spiders don't know any secrets.

And her grin would only turn feral in answer.)
