Prozac

For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
Isaiah 41:13 KJV

Prozac.
Prozac is a medicine used to help users with depression, by putting in a chemical called serotonin, which acts as a messenger to the brain, telling the brain it should make more happy juices, more chemicals to make us function as postive beings.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Prozac or its users, nor am I claiming I know more than scientists. I'm sure it does have positive effects on many people.

But when Prozac and other depression medications are used by 1 in 10 Americans (although some reports will say that it is 1 in 6!), and depression is still rampant all over the world, and suicide in children is skyrocketing, it's obvious we have a problem. It's obvious Prozac can't handle the job we gave it.

It's obvious our problem is deeper than the chemicals in our brain.

Jesus said that He came for the sick. He walked among those in despair, had dinner with those living in shame. Even though the Bible doesn't mention depression too often, Jesus surely healed someone with a broken heart. He was filled with love for every man, woman and child out there.

Jesus was stronger than Prozac.

You see, people don't take Prozac and get better. There is no day when Prozac says, "Get up, my child. You are healed." The people who take Prozac, they take Prozac and take Prozac and take Prozac.

They say Prozac helps with depression and helps people with their problems. Once again, I am no neurologist to debate for or against what Prozac can offer. But I do know this.

Prozac can't offer you love.

Will Prozac sit by you when you lose a loved one, or when your friends and family leave you?

Will Prozac help you when you don't know how you're going to pay the bills?

Will it help you when you think you have to lie to those who depend on you, saying everything is going to be alright; or when you are being lied to and you know it?

Does Prozac give you peace when you don't even know why you're hurting, hope for the future when you can't see past today, a sense of fulfillment and purpose that extends beyond emotions that change like the tide?

Prozac isn't enough.

We are more than just chemical mixtures walking. We don't need a Ph rebalance. We don't need more dopamine and less cortisol. We need LOVE.
