Chapter 1: No Sleep

It's twelve o' clock midnight, I am restless. Ever since that miniature earthquake we had hours before, I am filled with fear. Questions ponder inside my fifteen year old self. Will it happen again? What if it's dangerous? Will I get any sleep? I can't help but repeat these questions in my head. Something's wrong, and I feel it. I hear sounds of footsteps outside the door of my small dark room. It's Mary, the closest sister to my age, whom I suspected would be coming into my room at any moment. She was restless too, I could see it in her eyes. "Can't sleep either?" I ask her.

"Not a wink. But Grace and Caleb are sound asleep in father's room." Mary tells me.

"Good" which is all I can think of to say, "Just try not to think about it. Go to sleep."

"But I can't, that's all that's on my mind. Questions stirring in my head, will there be a another yet bigger earthquake? Will we be okay? I can't answer these questions and I feel like I'm going to scream!"

"Shhh! You'll wake the rest of the family up if you don't keep your voice down!" I whisper. Then I give Mary a long stare, she leaves. I wonder myself how I'm going to get to sleep. So much has happened in the past 24 hours. I can't take it all in. I am restless the whole night.
