you're awake

Dan woke up to the sound of consistent beeps and people conversing from a distance. He looked all around the place. He was in a bed, but not his. A room that wasn't his either.

He was in the hospital. A nurse walked in carrying a clipboard.

"You're awake!" The nurse said. "It's been a while."

How had he gotten himself in the hospital? What happened?

"You look kind of confused," The nurse said, "that's understandable."

It's true, Dan was very confused. "What happened?" He asked, his voice raspy.

"Oh um, well, you were in an accident." When the nurse saw the look on Dan's face she begins to frown. "I'm so sorry. But your doctor says you should be fine, I just need to check a few things to make sure nothing is out of order with your noggin."

As the nurse writes something on her clipboard, Dan begins to worry about what could have happened to Phil.

"Where's Phil?"

"Who? Oh your friend! He hasn't woken up yet. They've performed a surgery on him."

"Is he okay?" Dan starts to worry even more. Why would they need to do surgery on him?

"Oh yeah, I'm sure he's fine! Now, I need you to tell me your name."

"Dan Howell."

After the checkup the nurse leaves and a doctor comes in.

"Daniel? Oh great! You're up! How are you feeling?" The doctor asks.

"Kinda out of it, actually." Dan tells him. The doctor laughs.

"Yes, that's completely understandable. But other than that, you're not feeling any pain at all?"

"No, no pain."

"Ah, that's great, Dan! Or do you prefer Daniel?" The doctor asks.

"Dan's fine." The doctor gives a thumbs up. "Do you know where my friend Phil is?"

"Ah, your friend is in the intensive care unit."

"What happened to him?" Dan asks.

"Well, the same that happened to you. He was just busted up pretty bad. But if it makes you feel any better, I heard that he is doing fine and should be back to normal in a few days."

"Can I see him?"

"You know, not quite right now, as we need to make sure everything is fine with you and we can't let company in there anyway. But you will be able to get up and see him in tomorrow."

Dan nodded but he was still very worried about Phil. What if something terrible or irreversible happened?

"Well Dan, everything seems steady. We have called your family and they said they'll be here soon. If you ever need anything just ring by pressing that button, okay?" The doctor suggested. Then he left. Leaving Dan alone with only his thoughts and a TV with "The Great British Bake Off " playing quietly.

Dan was very tempted to press that button. He needed his best friend.
