Esme's POV
I'm guessing that because of my head injury I must have had a slight concussion and fell asleep. Luckily the child was still with me. I search can feel the ground again, the concrete. I look around at my surroundings. I must have been out for around 2 hours at the most. I take the child and carry him swinging my purse onto my shoulder remembering the present that dad got me earlier. "Thanks dad." I whisper hoping that somewhere he can hear me.
"Esme?"
"Is that you?" I hear a voice call from behind me. A boy with dirt covering his face, shirtless and wearing shorts stands behind me, a few graze and bruises across his chest are shown and that's it. "Dan?" I gasp. It can't be. What a coincidence. I reach out to hug him but quickly jump back as I feel a stabbing pain in my chest. "Whose that?" He points at the child over my shoulder. I shrug my shoulders. "I thought he was Ethan but he wasn't and he's still alive. I couldn't just leave him." He nods. we need to move, these waves don't usually just come in one." He says and with that he takes my wrist and pulls me towards a huge tree. And to my surprise it was still standing strong. There was only the tiniest amount of water here just an ankle full, we must be on higher grounds now. "Here hand me the boy." He says as he steadies himself onto a huge branch and placing the young boy onto the higher one. He rips a piece of his shorts wrapping it around the trunk of the tree and the boys stomach so that he doesn't fall. "I have a first aid kit. Here." I hurl the kit at him and he catches it.
I attempt to climb up the tree, my left leg giving way and I end up tumbling onto the ground, a sharp pain growing in the bottom of my back. I groan. I need to find my family, I walk away from the tree but remember I don't know where I am. I look down at my left leg, the skin looks as though it had been peeled off, my flesh was all you could see, I could see a few shards of glass stuck in the wound, as I look at it, it makes it more painful. "Where are you going, you need your leg seen to." I hear Dan call after me. "To find my family." I reply and limp towards what looks like piles of rubble and the tea mains of homes, businesses.
"Then I'm coming with you." He pants and appears behind me. "What about the boy?" How careless could he be? "What about you?"
"What do you care? He needs you more than I do." I spit gesturing to the child
"Yes, but I need you more than him." I sighs.
I mutter beneath my breath all the way back to the tree, I could feel Dans smirk on his face from behind me.
The earth begins to growl , the same vibrations rushing through my body, it's coming. "Hurry Esme." He shouts and gives me a push up so i am on the huge branch above the boy who has now opened his eyes. Dan pushes himself up just in time before the water swallows him. He sits beside me, I avoided his eyes for I don't have time to waste on a "romance."
"If it weren't for me you would have been swept away just then." He says speaking the truth, I hate it when I'm wrong, I don't reply, instead and drop down a branch and open my first aid kit.
"What's your name?" I ask the boy that reminded me so much of my brother. Will he have made if? What if they've put him in an orphanage or something?
"Jaden." He says softly, his voice barely a whisper. " that's a lovely name." I reply . I notice him staring at the water that seems to be peering before us.
I cleanse his wound on his face, flinching at times but he squeezes my hand to tell me whenever he is in pain.
"Where's my mommy and daddy?"
I look at Dan not knowing what to say to the young and vulnerable child. "Well.." I stutter rubbing my hands together. " They are, they've gone swimming. You know how they are such daredevils! And they told me and Dan to look after you since you and my brother look so alike!" I say tickling the child as I see a grin appear on his angelic face.
The sun was setting now, god knows how long it is before we can all go back home and live our normal lives. I wonder if Luke has heard yet. Jadens fast asleep, were going to need food soon, we need to find some help. "That's going to get infected you know." He says randomly staring at my wounded leg. I look at it, noticing above the wound my leg is going a purple colour and I know that that is far from healthy.
I daringly pull out the shards of glass, wincing everytime and cleanse it before doing a crap job of bandaging. " let me." He says and before I can reply he has hold of the bandages and tape neatly wrapping it up. "Thanks." I say politely.
