A myth from the late 1200s (not really don't sue me)
say that if you meet the one
that was truly meant for you,
Something impossible would happen.
They say that the two hearts glow.
So at least they know not to make the mistake
To pick someone else.
-----
It was in elementary school. Third grade.
Shakira and Garrett were best friends.
They did everything together.
From going down the slide
to dancing to the beat of nothing.
They were made for each other.
The only thing that pulled them apart was their parents taking them home.
They knew they would see each other again.
Monday to Friday,
and sometimes Saturdays, too.
When they would have their little play dates
or mini parties.
Yet,
they thought different of the other.
While Garrett liked Shakirah like she was a sister,
Shakirah liked him as a lover.
She told him one time when they were in English.
The next day, they split.
And they didn't even make eye contact.
(Besides when she stared at him.
Taking note of every single detail of him.)
And it wasn't even her fault for making it awkward.
It was the people who heard her say it to him.
They said that he would never love someone like her.
She grew tired of them making fun of her.
She wanted to die for a moment.
Just walk out the door,
run into the busy highway
on the far side of the school.
Just to get hit.
But she didn't.
And never did.
But she wanted to,
just not yet.
They even forgot about each other.
It had been that long.
And they never met again.
Until high school.
When Garrett was in the wrong crowd,
And Shakirah was anti-social.
He had a group of delinquents
And she had a group of herself.
And when they saw each other again,
They remembered.
But now,
It was terrible.
She thought of him as a predator,
And he thought of her as a target.
Crazy, isn't it?
And he did something absolutely outrageous.
Can you guess what?
He
Bullied
Her.
And she just took it.
She just took all the punches
And kicks
Without any emotion
Except emptiness.
He threw all
The kicks
And punches
With guilt
That he could not show.
.
.
.
So one day,
She was late to class,
She ran into him.
And he pushed her to the lockers.
He was just about to punch her.
And that's when it happened.
As he swung towards her face,
There was a bright, magenta light.
And they both knew what that light meant.
He stopped his movement.
And took a step back.
They stared at each other.
She took a deep breath.
And said.
"No."
And just walked away.
With him in shock.
Because she was the one.
