Logain fell down on the bed, completely exhausted from the day's events. In a single day, he kidnapped the crown prince of Ambria and even saved a village from another nation. This was why Logain didn't like to get involved with others. Because of the prince, Logain was in an unknown land and doing things he wouldn't normally do. Saving people wasn't Logain's style.

It wasn't like the people appreciated his efforts anyway. They looked at him as a monster for what he was. It didn't matter that Logain didn't ask to be born this way. If he had the choice, being a warlock wouldn't have been one of them. He would rather be a mortal and live a comfortable life. Instead, he was stuck living with powers he could barely control. It had been over two hundred years, yet Logain still didn't have a grasp on his magic. If the villagers ever found out that Logain was a warlock who couldn't control his magic, then they would surely kick them out.

Logain sighed. Most warlocks could conceal their identity. Their eyes would give them away, but a warlock with control of their magic could hide them. All warlocks had symbols in their eyes. The symbols were different for each warlock, but it was how mortals could tell what they were. Logain didn't have to worry about this since he wasn't born with symbols in his left eye. He was able to show it off without anyone suspecting him, and it was easy enough to cover his right eye with his bangs. The only reason people knew Logain was a magic user was because of his staff. He was often mistaken as a wizard, which was a lot better than a warlock. People were still afraid of wizards, but not nearly as much as they were of warlocks. He was lucky to be traveling with someone who didn't mind what he was.

Thinking about Casimir, Logain wondered where the prince was. The villagers allowed the men to stay in one of the rooms at the inn, but they had to share a room. These people weren't willing to spare more even though they saved them from the bandits. Logain stayed in the room, not bothering to leave. He knew he wasn't welcomed here despite his good deed for them. Casimir, on the other hand, was allowed to roam around the village freely. The villagers didn't like the company the prince kept, but they weren't as wary of him. Casimir was human, and he didn't reveal his divine powers. Even if he did, the people would accept him more than they accepted Logain. People weren't afraid of the light as they were of the dark.

The warlock was about to close his eyes and turn in for the night when he heard the door opening. He glanced over at the guest, only to see that it was Casimir. The prince was carrying two plates of food with him. Though the people were afraid of Logain, they were still offering him something to eat. That was more than Logain was used to.

Casimir set the plates down at the small table for them, but Logain didn't bother to join him. He wasn't feeling hungry despite not eating for most of the day. Besides, he wasn't in the mood for the prince's company. They were forced to be traveling companions for now, but that's all they were. Logain had no intention of getting to know the prince any more than this. Knowing that he was royalty was enough for the warlock.

Logain didn't have anything against the royal family of Ambria, but he had his reasons for not wanting to get close to them. Logain had met the youngest child and only daughter, Princess Selene, on many occasions. At one point he might have considered her a friend, but then things changed. After journeying with her for a short time, Logain learned something that made him keep his distance. The small detail changed his life, and Logain lost his best friend because of it. His friend was fine, but he was married to the princess now. Logain couldn't face them after that.

His heart ached at the thought, and Logain turned to his side to face away from the prince. He didn't want to recall such painful memories. It still hurts to this day. Traveling with someone from the royal family would be a constant reminder of what Logain lost. Maybe if he would have tried harder, then he could have kept his best friend.
