Casimir could feel Logain glaring at him as the prince took the lead. The prince chuckled, amused by the warlock. If Logain was completely against helping people, then he wouldn't tag along with him. He would have kept denying his help and yet, he followed behind the prince. Maybe he did it out of feeling responsible for Casimir, but he still didn't have to help people if he didn't want to. Logain wasn't as bad as he thought he was, and Casimir could see the good in him. He was simply misunderstood because of his race.
The prince stopped outside of the red door where they were directed. It was a decent-sized home, most likely owned by one of the nobles of Cordea. Since Cordea was a popular port city, a lot of money came in. From what he could see, the citizens didn't seem to be struggling. Of course, this wasn't all of Cordea, but from what he knew, this city was safe and wealthy. With a deep breath, Casimir knocked on the door.
It didn't take long for one of the owners to answer. A nobleman opened the front door, with his wife standing behind him. By the look of them, Logain got the feeling they were the snobby type of nobles. They looked men up and down, taking in their appearances. Their eyes landed on Logain, who still had his staff strapped to his back. He was used to the disgusted stares by now, so this didn't faze him. This was just the price he paid for being born a warlock. Mortals looked at him as though he was a monster; in reality, he only wanted a peaceful life.
Before the nobles had the chance to turn them away because of Logain, Casimir quickly spoke up, "Hello, I'm sorry to bother you. My name is Casimir, and this is my companion, Logain. We're travelers and we were looking for passage across the sea, but we've run into a bit of trouble. We were told about what happened to Cordea and we wish to help however we can, so the ship captain told us about your daughter, Maira. Any information you can provide about her would be very helpful."
The noblewoman was the first to answer with a scoff, "Don't assume that thing is our daughter. We gave her a home, but that was before we learned that she's a monster."
Her husband added, "She's been a blight to this city ever since we adopted her. Maira never had control over her powers, and we tried to help her suppress them, but it only made things worse. We should have gotten rid of her when we first discovered that she's a witch."
Logain clenched his fists as he tried to suppress the urge to yell at them. It was no wonder the girl lost control of her powers and ended up destroying things. A witch and warlock shouldn't be denied the use of their powers, or else they could lose control. Logain already had troubles with his powers because he was a halfling. He couldn't imagine what would happen if a full witch or warlock couldn't use their powers. That poor girl would have been suffering by living with these people.
If they didn't need their assistance, Casimir also had a few things to say to these people. He kept his cool, though, and asked, "Is there any way we could see the room she stayed in? Perhaps we can find some clues about her disappearance there."
This was the only lead they had. It was best to stay quiet about the noble's behavior and focus on what needed to be done. Afterward, then Casimir and Logain could let off some steam if they needed to. The prince was usually pretty good at keeping his cool, but this infuriated him. After spending time with Logain and getting to know him, the prince knew not all magical beings were monsters. He never believed they were to begin with, but being with Logain only proved his feelings more.
"Be our guest but keep your magic pet in check. It's too dangerous to have them roaming around freely." The noblewoman looked at Logain as she said this.
Her comment almost made Casimir snap. He was about to retort until he felt Logain grab his arm. The warlock clenched tightly and shook his head. As much as he would have liked to say something as well, they needed to keep their mouths shut. They were so close to possibly finding a discovery. If they blew it now, then they would have to figure out her whereabouts on their own.
