Chapter 37
At that pop both armies charged forward. The snarling possessed humans crawled as if they were four legged beasts rather that animals, mouths foaming as if they had some type of rabies. The ones who were obviously upper level demons managed to have some kind of control but you could see that they were struggling to control their own demonic savagery. I ran forward with the rest of the sorcerers to create a magical defensive line. The town's people without magic stood behind us with all sorts of weaponry waiting for the right time. The archers were waiting for the words. I counted as the crawling savages got closer and closer.
"NOW!!!" I shrieked causing hundreds of arrows to be released and embed themselves in the slavery targets. They didn't stop however, well the ones who got an arrow to the head did but the rest just carried on straight towards us. They were barely even 10 feet from our front line so I braced myself for the attack but they suddenly stopped. The slavering beasts eyes began to glow and they all stood on their feet in unison with their arms outstretched. I could feel the pull of the dark energy as they gathered it.
"Every one, brace yourselves!!!" Nate cried out as a black and red ball of energy gathered in front of the demonic army. I hastily created a shield out of the element but I don't know if it will hold, we've never gone up against this many all together.
I felt the other sorcerers strengthening the shield with their magic but I could feel it draining me already, a shield this size is too hard to keep up for too long. I watched in horror as the size of the dark energy expanded until it was about the same size as the shield I held before us, the grass underneath it withering and dying which in itself seemed to drain part of my powers even though it was only a small drain.
The demons released the energy which sped towards us, black sparks spitting out of the ball as it hurtled into our energy shield. I felt the contamination as soon as it hit. Like a disease or like something had polluted the good clean energy of the shield. I watched in horror as the shield faltered under the intense attack the blue glow of it becoming tainted a murky grew as the demons magic mixed with ours. I concentrated harder putting more energy into the shield, a single bead of sweat rolling down the side of my face as I strained against the dark magic. I watched as the shield grew brighter the blue infusing the shield once more and with a flash the demon energy was consumed. I felt the ground beneath shake at just the sheer force of it.
I could hear Nate shouting orders at the archers, something to do with aiming for their heads but I couldn't focus on their words as the demons began a deadly assault of rapid bolts of dark energy. It was so foul and wrong that I could actually taste it on my tongue. To be honest it was making me queasy. I was so distracted by the rapid strikes of dark energy that I didn't notice a flank of 50 or so demons, armed with swords and guns. The gunshots rang out around me and I heard groaning and cries of pains before there was a soft thus to echo each gunshot.
Ah crap looks like I'm going to have to make the shield more of a physical thing. But how am I going to do that? If I make it solid we won't be able to see unless....Ice....but how the hell do we get or attacks out? I didn't get time to figure it out because the first sword armed demon leapt at us in the front row. I quickly touched my hand to the ground and was rewarded with a thud as the demons human host collided with the rock shield I had created in front of me. Each sorcerer was now concentrated on one on one combat with a demon.
The townspeople's archers were still attacking fruitlessly at the advancing army. I could see Izzy out of the corner of my eye moving through the demonic army as if they were simply blades of grass. Her precision movements with her blade making her deadlier than most of the people here but it wasn't enough for the hoards of the demons because for every time we cut a body down the demonic spirit would exit the host and hang around in the atmosphere draining us of our powers and adding to the strength of the remaining demons.
