Have you ever played the elementary game where you write a story without using the word "said". If you haven't you missed out it was so hard but so fun.

When writing a conversation its important to use adjectives to convey your intended tone to the reader. Consistently using the word "said" can completely change the meaning of a chapter.

EX: Tammy walked into the room

"I'm pregnant" she said.

"How" said Gary

"I don't know" Tammy said

Vs.
Tammy walked into the room

"I pregnant" Tammy screamed joyfully.

"How" Gary whispered in confusion.

Tammy brushed the comment off. "I don't know"

See completely different tone of conversation.

So mentally when you are writhing your chapters pretend like its against the rules to say "said". It gets boring to read after awhile.
