The Day Wall Maria Fell
Blood
Every horrific motion played out as it had been done a thousand times over, mocking me with its predestined movements. I then realized  this was a dream that I wouldn't wake up from, not for a very long time.
The streets ran red with blood, following me no matter how many twists and turns I  made. I ran through the city I called home, hoping to find any sign of refugee to escape. I gasped for breath as  I tried to run as fast as my legs would carry me. But it wasn't fast enough. It never was. I made a sharp left, and felt my blood freeze as I realized it was a dead end. As I slowly backed away into a corner , I curled into a ball, hoping to disappear within the folds of my clothes. I whimpered softly and closed my eyes: waiting for the inevitable. I felt it's hot breath right alongside my cheek and as my body slumped with defeat, I heard a voice calling my name. "Maria ?" "MARIA!"

"Agggggghhhhhh!!"I screamed out and started to fling my hands out to protect myself from the pair of unknown hands gripping my shoulders. I started thrashing in the strong grip, tears streaming down my face, trying to escape when I heard what I thought was the most comforting voice I knew: my brother Armin.
"Maria, wake up," my brother cooed to me as I shakily start to relax in his comforting embrace, settling my head on his lap.
"Another bad dream?" Armin asked with concern slowly growing on his face.
"Yes, they're growing more frequent throughout the the day. I can't even close my eyes without my dreams flashing behind my eyes," I groaned, burying my my face into Armin's chest. Sometimes people couldn't believe I was Armin's twin  by the way we acted around each other. Physically, I was the female version of Armin: I had wavy hair the color of corn silk that fell to my waist, the long and thick eyelashes, the delicate face features aka the high cheekbones and the button nose,  the heart- shaped lips and even the short height , although I was even shorter than Armin. The biggest difference between us was while Armin had adorable baby blue eyes, I had piercing green eyes that supposedly looked like the forests that Armin and his friend Eren were always talking about. Although we were both kind of chickens, Armin had always looked after me since we  came out into this world together and I never questioned it, accepting the comfort of my twin as if it was the simplest thing in the world.  I tried to catch my breath as I scanned my surroundings, finding  my brother and I  relaxing under a tree with our baskets lying a few feet away from us. "Damn it, " I muttered under my breath, remembering that the only reason we were out in the field was to collect the daily produce from the farmer to cook dinner.  I quickly scrambled to my feet , tugging urgently at Armin's  hands and whispered harshly, "We have to go Armin. NOW "
He slightly nodded and briskly got to his feet, stumbling a bit before he found his balance and as soon as we slung the wooden baskets onto our backs, we headed off back home.
As we were walking alongside the street on the path home,  the town bell started ringing, meaning the Scout Regiment were back from outside the walls. " It would be amazing to see the outside world, just like the Scout Regiment!" Armin said, excitement shining in his eyes. I suddenly whirled around to face Armin. " Armin, you're kidding right ? How do you even know that the outside world is exactly how it is on the books? And even if it was like in the books, the Titans would eat us as soon as we stepped outside the walls." I said , trying to talk some sense into my twin. It was bad enough everyone thought he was a heretic for wanting to go beyond the walls . The second the thought popped in my head,we were suddenly pulled into an empty alley and pushed roughly down to the pavement. I smacked my head into the ground, wincing as I gingerly touched my head and when I placed my hands in front of my face, all I saw was red. Propping myself on my elbows, I whispered" Armin, are you okay?"  I looked up and saw three older  boys dragging Armin away from me and and leaving him on the pavement, cursing and insulting him . " So , this is the little boy who thinks he can see the outside world? HA , you and your wimpy sister might as well wear "Please eat me "signs around your necks,"  he sneered, getting close to Armin's face.  " What's the matter, heretic? Why won't you hit back?"  Armin shakily stood up and said in a low voice " That's stooping to your level. You resort to violence because you can't argue back., which means you concede defeat to me , does it not?"  "Shut up, smart-ass,"the boy growled and raised his fist .When I  saw Armin flinch and a small tear run down his face , I immediately started to stand up and tried to shove the boy away from Armin . I might be a coward, but I'll die before anybody hurts my brother. As my hand made contact with the boy's chest, he painfully gripped his hand on my wrist, forcing me immobile. " Well , looks like the little chicken has bite, after all . "  He barked out a harsh laugh and his other lackeys joined in. Armin shot me a desperate glance, hoping I wouldn't make the situation any worse than it already was. But I had already opened my fat mouth. "At least  I don't pick fights with people half your size," I hissed. His lackeys stopped laughing and looked to the boy expectantly " Are you going to let her talk to you like that?" As soon as he raised his hand above his head, I knew what was coming and braced myself for the impact. But when I closed my eyes, I heard a threatening voice shout "Hey, Stop!" I snapped my eyes open to see Eren running towards us at full speed. "Thank god ," I thought to myself. Eren had always been the impulsive and most determined out of all of my friends, heck the most impulsive PERSON I've ever known, although the only friends I have are Eren and Mikasa.  My relief fizzled out when the boys started laughing and said amongst themselves," The idiot is back for more. Does he want his ass kicked again?"  A smile grew on my face when I saw Mikasa rounding the corner right behind Eren. Although he never admit, Mikasa is scarier than Eren and by the look on her face as she races towards us, she means business. " C'mon, let's get out of here," the bullies said as they scampered away before Mikasa could reach them. " Ha, one look at me and they run with their tails between their legs!" Eren proudly said.  " Nope, it was actually Mikasa they saw," Armin and I said in unison. Eren scowled and offered a hand to help me up. I gripped his hand, a electric shock running through my arm at the slightest touch of Eren's hand. My cheeks tinted red and I turned around and dusted myself off before offering my hand to Armin. "Thanks, Maria. Are you okay?" Armin scanned my body for any injury. " Relax, I'm fine. " I said as I brushed off Armin's concern. I approached Mikasa and Eren and smiled, showing them that I was grateful for what they did. Eren proudly smiled back as Mikasa offered a small smile as I looped my arm with hers so we could all sit down by the river. As Eren and Armin started a rant on why they couldn't go to the outside world if it was their "own lives they were risking", I asked Mikasa with a fake half- smile " How is convincing Eren not to join Scout Regiment coming along? " Mikasa subtly rolled her eyes and said," You know Eren. Once he has eyes set on something, he won't stop until he has reached it."  I looked over at my best friend, with worry etched on her face and the permanent frown lines that made their home on her forehead. I remember the day Mikasa and I became friends.
Flashback ( 3 years ago )
I was walking in a straight line down the street when I accidentally bumped into a kid that looked like my own age. I started to look up, a " sorry already on my lips, when I peered into the gravest eyes I have ever seen. But I noticed something else right away. They also contained a deep sadness that would have gone unnoticed if  I haven't been looking directly at her. They intrigued me.She whispered " Sorry," and started to walk away. Hurrying after her, I tapped her shoulder and gave her a goofy smile. " It's okay, it was my fault anyways, if anything I should apologize. " I gave her a military salute with my tiny belly poking out from under my shirt. " I'm sorry, milady? " giving her a pointed stare so she could take the hint and tell me her name. "It's Mikasa," she whispered, looking up at me like if I was an alien. " Okay Lady Mikasa,  accept my apology and carry on. " I lisped through my two missing front teeth. Mikasa and I made eye contact and burst out laughing. As we started to walk down the street, I thought, " This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
and I cherished her friendship because she gave me something she hasn't give anyone since her parent's death: her love and complete trust.
