As I open my eyes, memories flood in a rush and I sit down to make the disoriented feeling dissipate. I jolted back to the real world when I hear Armin say, "It figures. Indeed I think people are insane if they think we'll be safe inside these walls forever. " I narrow my eyes at Armin, " Just because you and Eren want to explore the outside world, doesn't mean you should say those kind of things. It's bad enough people think you are a heretic, Armin, and it won't help if it seems like you want the wall to be destroyed." Eren whipped his head angrily towards me, "I want to know what the outside world is like! I don't want to live my entire life in ignorance inside these walls, like livestock. Or have you turned into a Wall Worshipper, incapable of defiling your namesake?" Eren teased.
I rolled my eyes as I thought of the countless times I've been teased by Eren on how my parents were Wall Worshippers and named their only daughter after their favorite outer Wall, the acclaimed Wall Maria. This caused many people to either look at me with reverence,mild curiosity, or worst, disgust. The outermost Wall, Wall Maria, the middle Wall, Wall Rose, and the innermost Wall, Wall Sina, were the only thing protecting us from the carnage of the outside world. The denizens of this city thought the Wall Worshippers were crazy to think of the Walls as living monuments to the gods, but I also think the Wall Worshippers sometimes get carried away, causing them to treat anyone that "defiles " the wall or disrespects it, including their own children. I cast a wary glance towards Armin who looked back with a disappointed look. " You know, Maria, just because the walls haven't fallen in a hundred years doesn't guarantee they won't fall today and yet... " Armin's sentence was cut off adruptly when a thunderous explosion went off in the distance and a minor quake snaked through the ground, causing Mikasa,Eren , Armin and I to scramble up to our feet. " What was that ?" Armin said with a slight quiver in his voice. "I don't know but I have a feeling we're about to find out," I squint my eyes through the cloud of smoke that appeared and seemed to swirl through the air.
When Mikasa and Eren start to run towards the site of the explosion, I grab Armin's hand and pull him through the masses of people blocking our way but after Armin got over his initial shock, he starts to gain speed and practically drags me to where Mikasa and Eren are staring up at the sky, their faces frozen in terror. " Hey, guys, what ha..... I trail off, almost choking on my own saliva as my breath got caught in my throat. My eyes bulged out and when I look over to Armin, his eyes are also bulging, both of us not wanting to believe what our eyes were showing us. Everybody around us watched in a mix of horror and amazement as a giant,skinless hand gripped the top of the wall, causing loose rocks to tumble down the wall and hit the ground with a loud thud, with pieces of gravel flying everywhere. Armin's body started to violently tremble and shouted to me, " It can' t be. Th- That Wall is over fifty meters high !" I whispered so low that it felt like I had said it inside my head, " It's one of them."
As I dragged my eyes upward again, my mind flashed back to the one and only time they had been mentioned.
" Sensei, where do Titans come from ?" I peered up into my teacher's face, waiting for a response
a huge shadow appeared and hovered over Shiganshina and the Titan's face peered over the wall,steam ejecting from the left side of it's face. Before I could even form a thought, the Titan's right foot lifts up and kicks in the gate so fiercely that a current of wind blew away anything or anybody within a hundred yards. Gripped with terror, my mind tried to block away the sound of children crying and adults screaming before the falling debris took away their last heartbeat. In a single moment , the giant Titan disappeared and a flood of smaller titans walked through the new opening in the gate. This isn't happening, this isn't happening, this isn't happening, I chant in my head. " I-It opened a hole in the wall..... "Armin croaked out, his face growing more pallid by the second He turned around to say something else but the only sentence that came out of my voice was, " The Titans are here. They are finally going to finish what they started centuries ago: to devour the last of humanity."
