When someone you love dies, a piece of you dies with them’ – unknown.

‘’Ian, where do I start? He was…just one of the most joyful people on earth. I never saw him without a smile on his face. When he was on stage, well, you’ve all seen how happy performing made him. He may not have been the tallest of guys, nor did he have the best dress sense…but Ian was one of the very few people that never failed to make me smile. Whenever I heard his voice, I knew that he was going to make me laugh. Just from the way he enters a room and the atmosphere he brings when he performs…nobody else has that. Ian was special. He was special to all of us. We’ve all lost a part of us and nobody can replace Ian. I’d also like to say that, ‘’ Dallon looked down at his shoes and wiped his eyes, ‘’I’d like to say that without Ian, none of us will be the same again. And Nat, ‘’

He looked at me this time. I was in such a state, my mother was sat next to me, trying to comfort me. And yet, despite all the people in here, giving me those sympathetic smiles, I wasn’t feeling any better at all. The only time I broke the smallest of smiles was when Dallon mentioned Ian’s dress sense. It’s true, Ian wasn’t the most fashionable guy around, I had to give a lot of input into his outfits.

‘’We’re all here for you, every single one of us. It’s what Ian would have wanted’’.

Dallon nodded and stepped down from the podium. I stood up and walked straight into his arms. He hugged me tight, not letting go.

‘’Go on Nat, do it for Ian,’’ he whispered, releasing me from his grasp.

I took a deep breath and stepped up, resting my hands on the wooden podium that was in front of me. Everyone in the church was staring right at me. Everyone. They were all here to pay their respects to Ian, but in every single person, I saw pieces of Ian staring right back at me. I shook my head and looked at my hands. A beautiful golden ring with three diamonds was still on my finger. I ran my fingertips across the diamonds, twisting the ring as I spoke.

‘’I’d firstly like to thank you all for being here today…it’s what Ian would have wanted. I know he’d be grateful.’’

The church remained still. A thick blanket of silence covered the air.

‘’I don’t really have a speech prepared. There’s so much I could say about Ian, we’d be here all day. But anyway, I guess I should start off by agreeing with Dallon that Ian didn’t have the best dress sense in town. I did in fact have to pick out his outfits and take him shopping a lot of the time,’’

A low chuckle rumbled throughout the building.

‘’But even those moments I will cherish. I’m pretty sure Dallon’s said it all to be honest. I will cherish every single moment I’ve ever spent with Ian forever. I have so many memories, but my favourites will always be seeing him on stage. He used to tell me every day how much he loved his job, and I knew he meant it. He looked his happiest when he was on stage, living his dream. I want to just thank all the guys for making Ian live his dream, because without the band, I know he wouldn’t have been as happy.’’

I sighed and looked down at my ring.

‘’Despite everyone saying that Ian and I argued like an old married couple, the only thing I regret was not making one of you guys tell Ian to propose earlier. Even though I’m not married, I’ll always be Mrs Ian Crawford’’.
