Chapter Twenty Four

Dante hovered above the trees, flying and surveying the mountains before the first rays of dawn could touch the land. It was dark enough outside that his cobalt scales appeared as a navy blue that was bordering on black.

He had left in the middle of the night to hunt for Dracula by himself, even though he was supposed to join Elena and the Order on their search just a few hours later. That decision had been made while he was restless in bed, as he had recalled their last, failed joint attempt to find Dracula. So, wanting to spare Elena from coming into contact with Dracula, Dante had started searching first, Shifting back to his true form. His eyesight and general senses were superior in his draconic form and made it easier to hunt.

Yet, after hours of scouring the land and attempting to establish a mind-link with Dracula, Dante came up with nothing, even as the meeting time approached. Rays of light infiltrated his golden, slitted eyes. He wasn't quite sure what time it was, but he knew he needed to Shift back into his human form, before the Order arrived. He swooped back down to the ground, near the base of the mountain where he had left a pile of clothes to change into.

Dante started trudging toward the entrance of the park, where he had told Elena that he would meet her and the team. The explanation he had given her was piss-poor, but using Finn as an excuse seemed to worked. Ambling leisurely, but still vigilantly, he thought of the previous day at the beach. Even now, he cursed fate for dragging him away from Elena yesterday.

Finn did have an accident, just not a car accident like Anya had told Elena. No, what happened to Finn was more mystical. Finn completely lost his sight after relentlessly using his future-seeing abilities, even while knowing that eyesight was a casualty of overusing his powers. He had simply pushed the boundaries too far.

Dante recalled the scene from yesterday: a lone tear running down Finn's right eye, before it disappeared from sight, along with any emotion that had previously been on his face. After that, Finn calmly rose to his feet and declared that his last vision instructed him to fly back to the Fire Territory and consult with Eon about something he saw in the future. And despite protests and concerns from both Dante and Anya, Finn had affirmed his decision to fly back, even with his new condition. And so Anya had volunteered to escort him back, despite Finn's own protests.

When Finn had realized that he wasn't going to be able to change Anya's mind, he had sighed and turned to Dante to give him infuriatingly odd and cryptic messages.

Eat a sandwich tonight. Don't forget to wash the sheets. You will search warehouses. There's a package for you in your bedroom drawer. Do not look at it until tomorrow, and only when you need it.

After a moment of utter confusion: What is the package? How will I know when I need it?

You just will.

Why can't you just be explicit?

Where's the fun in that?
