Chapter Twenty Eight

Elena had spent most of the morning feeling absolutely miserable in all ways. Not only was she emotionally traumatized, but she was also physically afflicted. Being knocked in the head and punched in the face must have given her a concussion, given her overall nausea and dizziness. Occasionally, she even heard discombobulated whispers and had double vision. This whole experience gave her an even worse feeling than a hangover, but it gave her something, anything, to try and take her mind off last night's revelations.

But even the discomfort reminded her of how she received her injuries, which in turn reminded her of...Dante. Who was a dragon.

That lying bastard.

But then she was reminded of everything that had been revealed to Dante through the Order and all the secrets he now knew. She recalled every memory she had of Dante knowing what she knew now. And every time she stressed over the past, her pounding headache would be exacerbated even more.

Perhaps she should have gone to see a medic back at the base or a normal doctor even, but she knew she needed to settle a few things, especially with Keira, who had also been kidnapped yesterday. Even though Elena herself was reeling from yesterday's events, Keira's situation must have been even more extreme. After all, she did find out about the existence of dragons, hunters, and Elena's part-time job.

Elena gently rested her head on her palms, her elbows digging into her thigh. She needed to talk to Keira, but she couldn't leave the house. No, after she had come home last night with a bruise on her face and information extracted from her kidnapping about the mole in the Order, both of her parents had thrown a massive fit. After carefully examining her injuries, her parents had hugged her and insisted that she stayed at home for the time being. Then, they icily planned the downfall of their mortal enemies. Adrián was going to deal with the traitor in their midst, Raquel was ready to rip into the Society of Slayers, and Elena was to conquer her trauma from the safety of their home.

And despite the fact that they now knew the identity of the mole in their organization, Elena still felt a twinge of guilt for omitting a vital piece of information. She had yet to tell her parents that Dante was a dragon. Everything else had been revealed: the Chalice, Dracula, and her friends.

Just not Dante. At least, not yet. Not until she herself finally wrapped her head around that fact. But Elena wondered if she would ever get over it.

Her phone rang, the sudden shrill sound drilling into her eardrums, making her wince. Elena quickly scrambled over the clean clothes on the floor to answer the device and silence the ring. "Hello?" she answered.

There was a moment of silence, causing Elena to wonder whether or not it was a telemarketer on the other end. But after three seconds, and another prompt by Elena, a familiar voice spoke. "Elena?" Keira's bell-like voice asked quietly.

"Hi Keira," Elena replied awkwardly. She couldn't think of anything to add. What did one even say to someone who just found out about the existence of mythological creatures after being kidnapped by a psychopath?

"Can we talk?" Keira asked.

Elena nodded, despite knowing that the visual cues wouldn't be communicated through the line. "Of course. Come over?" This conversation needed to be in person; a phone call would not be acceptable.
