They didn't have to wait long when they got to the doctors office which was no surprise to Edwardus as the doctor they came to see has been a friend of his since childhood.
"Ward my man! Good to see you back in town. How was the runaway trip?"
Edwardus glances at Rose who had suddenly gone still beside him.
"It was good Diego."
"Obviously better than you're letting on. Who is this lovely beauty?" His friend moved away from him to lift Rose's hand and place a kiss on the back on it.
"This is Rose Stevens"
"Pleasure to meet you ms. Stevens"
"Nice to meet you too"
"So what can I do for you lovely folks today?"
"We're here to get a DNA test done"
Edwardus wanted to laugh at the expression on his friend's face. Diego stood before him blinking and at a complete loss for words. He had to clear his throat to get his attention back to them.
"Well OK then. Rose why don't you take a seat right on up here"
Edwardus extended his hand to help her onto the examining table but she brushed pass him and climbed up on her own. He ignored the curious kook Diego was sending him.
"Why did you call him Ward?" He heard Rose suddenly ask his friend.
Oh crap! Here we go.
"Its been a childhood nickname that I gave him. Kind of stuck throughout the years"
"So it was you!" She turned to him with a angry glare.
"Rose not now!"
He watched as she dug into her bag and pulled out the check he had sent her. She wripped it into tiny pieces and handed to to Diego.
"Can you please hand these to sir Ward Doctor"
Diego took the torn check and walked to Edwardus with an amuzed expression. He extended his hand but the glare Edwardus sent him caused him to burst into laughter and walk to the trashcan to dispose of the bits of paper.
"We'll discuss this later" he said looking at Rose.
He listened as his friend instructed Rose to stay very still. Any sudden movement could harm the baby once he inserted the needle. He could see the nervouse and worried expression on her face. He didn't miss the tears in her eyes as she glared at him before looking away. He suddenly felt like the worst kind of man for asking her to do this but he knew he needed proof of paternity to clear away all doubt's before he could make a decision.
Diego excused himself to quickly get the sample to the lab which left them alone in the room.
