Why Do You Hate Me, Caoimhe?

It had been almost a week since Tina had arrived, and it had been the most fun week of her whole life. She helped with the hippogriffs, she learned how to cook from Newt's mother, and Newt was constantly taking her inside his case. It was still as wonderful as she remembered. The week would be perfect, if she could figure out why Caoimhe seemed so against the idea of Tina coming over. She always looked at Tina as though she might transform into a beast and kill everyone. It made her uncomfortable.

One night, Tina was walking through the house after another nightmare when she saw Caoimhe sitting by the window, gazing at the stars. "Shouldn't you be asleep?" Tina asked. The young girl jerked her head, scowling at her, but anyone could see she had been crying. "Are you okay?" Tina asked, sitting down next to her. "N-no," Caoimhe's voice trembled as she spoke. "I can't stop thinking about Newt and-" A choke cut off her words, new tears spilling down her pale cheeks. Tina squeezed her hand gently, giving time for Caoimhe to pull herself back together. "I can't stop thinking about Newt and Leta," Caoimhe said, wiping tears away. They sat in silence for a bit before Tina asked, "What about them?" "The way Newt looks at you. I-it's hard to describe. It's the same way he used to look at Leta," Caoimhe whispered. She cocked her head. "Has Newt ever told you how he got expelled from Hogwarts?" "I heard he was thrown out for endangering human life with a beast," Tina replied, flashing back to the interrogation. Caoimhe grinder her teeth in anger. "Who told you that?" Caoimhe's voice was sharp. "A man at my work," Tina said nervously. Caoimhe sighed. "Tina, I think you have the right to know Newt's story. I will warn you though, it doesn't have a happy ending." Chills went up Tina's spine as Caoimhe spoke. Caoimhe took another deep breath before she began.

"I don't remember much of Newt's time at Hogwarts. I was young, naive. But I knew that Newt was a popular victim of bullying. I knew that few people accepted him for the man he really was. I knew that Leta was the first to seemingly care for him. Newt was thrilled to have someone like Leta. She loved magical creatures almost as much as he did. I was young, but looking back, I realize how stupid I was. I thought that Newt would marry her and have beautiful children. I had a wedding all planned out." Caoimhe smiled at her silliness when she was younger. But her face went dark. "At his seventh year, everything went wrong. Leta was angry when a boy made fun of her. She wanted revenge. She didn't care about the fact that the chance of Newt getting caught in the crossfire was great. She set a beast loose after the boy. It nearly killed him. Both Newt and Leta were sent to the headmaster for questioning. Leta was obviously the one at fault, but Newt took the blame and was expelled in her place." Caoimhe's face went hard. "Newt received a letter a week after his expulsion. It was from Leta. She told him that she was glad he was gone, that he had been a burden. It broke Newt's heart. He became aimless, depressed. He had lost the one person he thought accepted him. Mum and Dad noticed that he was mostly happy when he was around magical beasts. So Dad took out an old suitcase, fixed it up, and gave it to Newt. They wanted Newt to accomplice his dream of studying magical beasts. After a year in the war, Newt said his farewells to us and left. But we all knew that Newt was still broken inside. We all knew that no one would ever trust him again because of Hogwarts. And we knew that Leta would never own up to what she had done. Newt's future was basically ruined because of a girl."

Tina found herself growing angry at Leta. How could anyone do such a thing? Her attention snapped back to the present when Caoimhe began to speak again. "He looks at you the same way he used to look at Leta. I'm scared for him, Tina. I do like you, you seem to be much more caring than Leta was, but I'm terrified that Newt will hurt himself again. I'm scared if his heart is broken one more time, he won't be able to recover." Caoimhe buried her face into her knees and began to sob again. "I would never hurt Newt, Caoimhe. I would rather die," Tina said gently. Caoimhe looked up at her. "Don't die please. That would definitely hurt him," Caoimhe joked. The two girls burst out laughing, trying to stifle their giggles to keep themselves from waking up the whole house. "If you truly love Newt, I'll accept that. But if I hear you ever do anything like what Leta did, I will use every hex that I learned from Theseus on you," Caoimhe warned. Caoimhe hugged Tina before getting up to head back to bed. Tina's jaw hardened. She will never hurt Newt. That was a promise.
