We reached the destination of the new fort a couple hours after we found-- my mother.
We'd nearly finished setting up our supplies and gathering local supplies, when I'd had enough of staring at her dead body, still in disbelief.
I motioned to Chris, "It's time." I whispered, he nodded and grabbed the shovel while I wandered off to find something for a grave stone.
Chris found a spot and cleared away debris to start digging a grave. I found a Sharpie and a sheet of thin metal, works for me, I thought.
I wrote Alexandra King 1999-2027 in bold letters on the metal sheet and planted it above the grave. I put her wallet in my pocket so I'd never forget her. Though I wouldn't anyways. They all looked at me with utter sympathy.
"I'm glad she got to rest peacefully. Though I never met her, I bet she was a nice woman." Chris genuinely said, taking off his red baseball cap and covering his heart with it.
Bella and Simon simultaneously nodded in agreement and I warmly smiled at them.
"You're all the bestest friends I've ever had." I hugged everyone, and the only friends I've ever had, I added to myself.
We cleared the debris off a large area of land and started a fire in the center while we kept at work attempting to make a suitable fort. We ended up arranging boards into a doorway leading into a collapsed house.
We began to search the house for supplies and materials. Only a room was inaccessible, so we found two mattresses in bedrooms, I started to clean up the floor in what looked to be the living room. I picked up a fallen picture frame and brushed the broken glass away with my broom, I examined the picture.
It was a boy kneeling on a soccer field in a blue uniform next to a soccer ball. He looked to be around thirteen with straight brown hair just covering his eyebrows.
I set the picture in my back pack and took some candles off the fireplace too. I started tugging on a stubborn board that wouldn't come loose, only to have it snatched from my hands by Chris as he ripped it away from the place where it'd been lodged.
An angry growl came from the hole the board had been blocking, then the boy from the picture and a girl peaked their faces out at us.
"Oh my gosh, it's people!" The boy piped up. "I haven't seen anyone but my sister here since everything collapsed!"
The girl giggled at her brother and continued to nibble on the cookie she'd been chewing on.
"Well," Chris said, holding out his hand. "Join us."
"There's more people?" The girl said, taking Chris' hand.
"Yeah, there's more." Bella chirped, peaking around the corner with Simon.
"I don't think we've introduced our selves, I'm Austin and this is my sister Clara." Austin said pointing to himself then to Clara.
I went around introducing all of us while Chris dragged mattresses into the large living room. Bella took anything useful and tossed it in her backpack and later that day me and Simon searched the neighboring houses.
