I hadn’t even noticed I fell asleep until I heard a crash downstairs; I got out of Billie’s hold and threw the covers off of me. Billie started to stir as I ran down the stairs to see Macy on the floor with a familiar looking man above her. “What’s going on?” I asked quietly, Macy’s head snapped to me and I noticed she had a black eye.

“Go up stairs Evie.” She said quietly with pleading eyes.

As much as I hated the woman she was my mother and I wouldn’t not stand for her being hit, not matter how much she may deserve it. “No… He did this?” I asked while pointing at the guy whose name I remembered was George.

“Listen to your mother and go up stairs.” George said while stumbling towards me. I stayed there in fright as he closed in on me and I did the only thing I could think of… I kicked him in the crotch and he fell to the floor in pain.

Macy rushed towards the guy on the floor to aid him, but he swatted her away before yelling profanities while exiting the house. She stumbled backwards with her mouth hanging open before looking at me with rage. “Just who in the hell do you think you are?” She asked while closing in on me. “You do know he was my best client! He is the reason we still have this shithole!” She said with gesturing to our apartment.

“With your charm I am sure you can find another sugar daddy.” I said before going to walk up the stairs but she caught me by my arm. Her nails dug in so deep it drew blood as she whipped me around and planted a firm punch on my face.

“You fucking bitch. You are nothing, nothing to me, nothing to that boy, and if your pathetic father was alive… you would be nothing to him too. Once he realized what a bitch you are. Did you know I didn’t even want a kid? He was the one who would beg for a child and I thought maybe it would be so bad, but no, the bastard has to up and die on me, leaving me with your stupid ass.” She spat.

I nodded my head slowly, trying not to cry. “You are a fucking ungrateful whore. He loved you and you talk about him like that? If it had not been for him, I would be glad I was never born.” I said, my voice wavering every so often.

“If it had not been for him you wouldn’t have been born.” She said with a sly smile and the tears I tried to hold back started falling down my cheeks. My father would have never stood by and let her talk to me like this… but he isn’t here, and he isn’t coming back.

I accepted my defeat and returned to my room pretty much drained... Billie sat on the edge of my bed with his head in his hands, he wouldn’t even have noticed me if it weren’t for my creaky floor boards. He looked up at me looking murderous. I passed him and went into my bathroom to check out the bruises added to my already beaten face. To be honest it is the worst I have ever had. My left eye was almost swollen shut and my nose had started bleeding again but I didn’t notice until now. I pulled a wash cloth out of one of the drawers before wetting it and cleaning up my face. Once it was cleaned to satisfactory I walked out and joined Billie on my bed.

“She is wrong you know.” Billie said softly as he grabbed my hand.

“No… I think she was pretty spot on.” I said bitterly.

“You are wrong too then.” He scoffed.

“Please enlighten me to how I am any less than a burden to anyone.” I said.

“Well for one you are not a bitch… You are actually one of the nicest people I have ever met.” He said with a small smile.

“Bu-“ I started but he cut me off my putting a finger over my lips to silence me.

“I am not finished. You are not nothing, believe me… You are something.” He said almost in disbelief. “and I may not have ever met the guy, but those picture speak a thousand words.” He pointed to the photos of me and my father. “You were not nothing to him Evie… You were the world to him.”
