'So i think i found a case' Daxton said, beaming with excitment as i drove down the highway, just passing the 'exiting Lawrence' sign.
'Already! Seriously, we have only just left Lawrence and you've already looked for and found a case?' I replied, in both disbelief and slight nervousness.
My dad didnt take the news so well. When i told him i was going to hunt monsters with Dax, he just froze. Almost like i'd told him that if he moved, he'd explode. Imagine telling an over-protective dad that his daughter was going to risk her life everyday and he couldnt do or say anything to stop her, and could no longer protect her. Yeah. It didnt go well. My brother Dean was just as bad.
'Well, i figured that after everything that happened with your dad, you might need something to take your mind off it. Plus, when is the right time to start hunting monsters? I dont think that there is a rule or anything... is there? I mean, your the expert.'
'Expert? Ha. I am NOT an expert. Fine, whats the case?' I asked, nervous yet intrigued.
'Well, 27 year old Kelli Harland was found murdered in the back alley of a nightclub' He stated, as if it was the best thing he had ever heard.
'Urm, firstly, maybe you shouldnt sound so excited when talking about a dead girl. And secondly, that doesnt sound like our kind of thing.' I love Daxton, but sometimes he REALLY confuses me.
'Thats because i havent told you the best part.' He said, smiling. He looked a tad bit psychotic, but no more than usual.
'Dax! Stop smiling! You shouldnt be so happy about a dead girl! Its creepy!' I giggled, hitting him gently on the arm.
'Come on, whats the 'best part' then?' I asked, as i turned my attention back to the road.
'Kelli was found drained of blood, bite marks all over her body. And the nightclub she was outside of? Its been abandoned for 8 years.' He said, almost like it was obvious.
'Vampires.' I said.
I only saw a few while hunting with my dad. They are fast, manipulative and down-right awful creatures. But, ones that i can deal with.
'So' Daxton said, staring at me.
'So what' I replied, confused but not wanting to take my eyes off the road for too long.
'So, you need to tell me about them so i can help!' He shouted with a sense of urgency.
'Oh, right. Urm, well you can kill them by cutting their heads off..'
'Decapitation..okay' He said as he jotted some things down on his laptop.
'Urm, they usually stay in nests. A large group will stay together meaning that stealthness is key to surviving an invasion of the nest.' I added, beginning to worry.
'Stealth, okay. What next?'
'Dax, are you sure this is a good idea?' I said feeling the anxiety start to rush in.
'What? Is what a good idea?'
'This! Leaving my dad, hunting on our own. What if something happens to you. What if something goes wrong and i lose you. I couldnt deal with that. You arent prepared for this life and i've thown you in at the deep end. Im sorry Dax. Lets go back. You shouldnt..'
'Arya. Stop. Im fine. Im not worried. I'm scared out of my freaking mind, but im not worried. I dont doubt for a second that you wont be there. And im gonna learn. You really think that im gonna go running into a situation that i dont feel confident in. Hell no! Give me a chance. We've got this.' He said as he put his hand on my shoulder.
I looked him dead in the eyes. I could see that he was being genuine. I sighed.
'Lets get us some vamps!' I said as i smiled at him.
He smiled back then turned to his laptop and continued typing away.***********************************
'Dax, wake up. We're here' I said, as i gently shook his arm.
'Urgh. How long was i out for?' He replied whilst rubbing his eyes.
I checked my watch to see.
'Around 3 and a half hours' i said stepping out of the car.
He stretched his arms then headed for the trunk to grab the bags.
'Im gonna go get a room then i'll come back and help you' I said as i began walking towards the reception.
When i came back out, i saw quite the sight. Dax was holding two bags on each arm, had balanced two in between his arms and his chin and was in the process of trying to get another one.
'Dax, stop! Let me help.' I said as i ran towards him.
I took one of the bags from under his chin, and the two left in the trunk then locked up the car.
'Okay, we are room.. 7. Just there' I said, pointing towards the room.
The next couple hours were quite boring. They consisted of us getting accustomed to the place, grabbing some food, having a nap then doing some more research.
'So i was thinking that we could head to the crime scene, take a look? I had a fake FBI badge made for you.' I said as i waved his new badge in front of him.
'Aww! I thought you'd never ask!' He exclaimed as he winked at me, took the badge and walked towards the door.
'Lets do this thing' he shouted, throwing his arms in the air and sprinting out the door.
I giggled then followed.
