Chapter 1

I couldn't run any faster, but in my head, I knew I had to. The rocky terrain below my feet made me stumble, and sometimes the roaring from behind me seemed to get louder, almost loud enough to block out the sound of my heart pounding against my ribs. Once again I checked my empty arrow sheath, praying that more would magically appear. No such luck. I was tempted to yell and curse at my father, but that would only increase the risk of the monster finding my location.

I tried to weave my way in between the tall trees and spot the entrance to camp, but I couldn't see anything with the dark sky approaching. From behind me I heard a thumping noise, and I couldn't resist turning around.

I twisted just in time to see the huge manticore taking a leap over me, blocking my way. I started to panic. I had already wasted my only weapons trying to kill this thing. My last resort was to scream.

"Help! Help me! Someone?!" My voice sounded foreign, like it was coming from a loudspeaker in another room. The manticore jumped up onto its hind legs, using his front paws to push me over and hold me down against the hard earth. I felt rocks through the back of my thin sweater, and the weight of the monster made it impossible for me to take in any more air.

What would be a be a better way to die? Deadly scorpion sting from its tail, or the razor sharp teeth? The backwards blow had knocked the air out of me, and right before I passed out, I saw a figure run into the monster with a large shield, taking the weight off my chest. The manticore roared and turned toward the intruder, preparing to use his tail. "NO!" I screamed, and sat up quickly. Suddenly I was in my bed, hitting my head against the bunk above me.

Rubbing my head, which was already throbbing, I sucked in deep breaths. Not that dream again. Why did I keep reliving my fear every night?
