The lesson I had skipped was healing, and after Percy left I only had 5 minutes to make it to canoeing. I jogged down to the dock and set down my bow and arrows by a pile of life jackets. I grabbed a bright orange one that looked like it might fit as an older camper from the Ares cabin explained the safety procedures. I half-listened as I looked around the group for a potential partner. "Alright, everyone! Grab your partner and head towards the canoes!"

I looked around for anyone who would partner up with me, but everyone else seemed to have a friend in the class and groups of two were formed almost immediately. I was just about to find the leader and ask what to do when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I took a deep breath and turned around to find Marcus flashing a winning smile, his hair shining almost gold in the direct sunlight. When he saw the look on my face, his smile faded. "Can you tell me what I did wrong?" he asked slowly, his eyebrows furrowed.

Before I had the change to respond (or ignore him, which was also a possibility) the Ares camper started ordering groups into canoes. "Marcus. Ellie. You're in canoe 11." I sighed and carefully tried to climb into hte canoe, with Marcus right behind me. I had one foot safely on the seat when a boy from the neighboring boat grabbed the end of our canoe, knocking me off balance. I was about to hit the water when Marcus caught me almost effortlessley, setting me in the canoe. He turned to the boy, who was snickering with some friends I recognized from the Hermes cabin.

"What the Hades, man?!" When the boy turned to Marcus and took in his wide shoulders and physique, he stopped laughing immediately.

"Uh.... sorry. It was just a joke." Marcus glared at him and I watched in awe as the Hermes kid apologized again and again.

"Yeah. I didn't find it so funny," he muttered under his breath as he crawled into the canoe across from me.
