Chapter 6

The day after her birthday, someone came to see Olivia.

There was a knock on the door at exactly three p.m.

Lisa had sent Olivia to answer it. She was greeted by a severe looking woman wearing floor length emerald green robes. Her square shaped glasses framed her green, cat-like eyes. Her black hair was drawn back into a tight bun, and a pointed hat lay atop her head.

'Umm... Hi.' Said Olivia awkwardly.

'Hello,' said the woman. 'My name is Minerva McGonagall. I am here to offer you a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.'

'Excuse me?'

'I understand that you have not received your acceptance letter?'

'What letter?'

McGonagall handed Olivia a parchment envelope with her address handwritten on the front in emerald green ink.

Olivia looked up at McGonagall uncertainly.

McGonagall then asked, 'Professor Dumbledore sent me to come and make sure there were no problems, and to explain the situation better, May I please come in?'

Olivia stood to the side, not sure of what else to do. McGonagall entered, her robes sweeping across the floor.

Olivia stayed in the hallway, but she heard McGonagall introducing herself to her parents. Olivia opened the letter.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. Of Wizards)

Dear Ms. Rose,

We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Term begins 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.

Olivia looked inside the envelope for the list of equipment.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Uniform
First-year students will require:
1. Three sets of plain work robes (black
2. One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear
3. One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar)
4. One winter cloak (black, silver fastenings)
Please note that all pupils' clothes should carry name tags.

Set books
All students should have a copy of each of the following:

Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
A Beginners Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble

Other equipment:
1 Wand
1 cauldron (pewter, standard size 2)
1 set glass or crystal phials
1 telescope
1 set brass scales

Students may also bring an owl OR a cat OR a toad.

PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT FIRST-YEARS ARE NOT ALLOWED THEIR OWN BROOMSTICKS

After Olivia had read through the list, she only had one thought:

This woman must be crazy.
