The next lesson after lunch was Transfiguration. They were ten minutes early, so the four girls sat in a group in the back right corner of the classroom, with Olivia and Annabel sitting behind Angelina and Alicia.

Annabel told them what Alyson had said.

'When we were five, just before Alyson left the orphanage, I did magic. Consciously. It was the first conscious spell that I ever did, actually.' Annabel explained cautiously. She knew she had to tell the others - they were her new best friends - but that didn't change the fact that they may judge her or suddenly not like her. 'It was quite simple magic. It wasn't actually proper conscious magic, if you know what I mean, it's just that I meant to do it.

'Basically, I was bored with Alyson, Amy and Scarlett, always saying that I was a disgrace of not wanting to follow in our fathers' footsteps. Eventually, I ended up cursing all of their toys. Every time they touched them, it would burn their hands, and, when they told the woman who ran the orphanage, she did a spell to see who cursed the toys.

'And she said that it was Scarlett.

'They all knew it was me. But, the person who adopted Amy and Alyson had offered to take Scarlett, too. Scarlett's punishment was that she was no longer allowed to stay with the other kids - and the woman who ran the orphanage convinced the person who adopted the other two to leave Scarlett behind.'

'So... They blame you for the fact that they had to leave Scarlett behind, at the orphanage?' Olivia said, to confirm it.

'Yeah.'

The room had filled up with students now. After Annabel had said that one word, Professor McGonagall walked in.

'Welcome to Transfiguration.' She said in her stern voice. She had a way of bringing silence to a room without asking for it. 'Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will be punished, and asked to leave and not return.'

The Professor took out her wand and pointed it to a table. It turned into a pig, and then back into a table again. This was greeted by warm applause.

'Transfiguration is not a simple form of magic. It takes a lot of practise, and skill to master.' She then flipped over a blackboard, to show a rather long list of complicated-looking notes. 'Please copy this down.'

The class did as they were asked.

By the time that they had finished copying the notes, they had just over half an hour left of the lesson.

Professor McGonagall used magic to move a single matchstick to land in front of each person in the class.

'Now, for the rest of the lesson, I would like you to attempt to transform the matchstick into a needle, using this incantation.' She pointed with her wand to an incantation on the board, ut in acus. From the Latin that Olivia had learnt - or rather, taught herself whenever she got bored - it meant, To The Needle.

People began saying the incantation repetitively, trying to make their matchsticks look slightly needle-like.

After about ten minutes of her half-heartedly saying the incantation, Professor McGonagall finally noticed Olivia.

'You know you can do it,' The Professor said simply.

Olivia sighed slightly, clearing her mind.

She imagined it inside her head - the match turning silver, growing thiner and shorter - as she said the incantation, pointing her wand at the match.

The matchstick, much to Olivia's amazement, slowly but surely transformed into a needle, even with a small hole for the thread at the top.

'Twenty points to Gryffindor,' said McGonagall, smiling a rare, secretive smile before going of to scold the Weasley twins for setting their matches on fire.

'But, they're matches,' Olivia could hear Fred say.

'They were made to be set alight!'

✨✨✨

Professor McGonagall had set them their first piece of homework so far, due in on the next lesson, to practice the spell, and had given everyone three matchsticks that had been bewitched with a special signature, so that Professor McGonagall would know if they had just brought in three needles, or if someone else had performed the spell, instead of you. But the enchantment would not alter their ability to transform the matchstick.

The final lesson of the day was Defence Against the Dark Arts - something Olivia had been looking forward to a lot.

She thought that it would be quite interesting to see Scarlett, Amy and Alyson in a lesson that taught them how to defend themselves against their fathers.

The Professor was named Professor Morehouse. She had the class copy down some notes about the Knockback Jinx, Flippendo, after taking a register. Then, she had them all pair up and practice the jinx on each other, after reassuring them that it was perfectly safe.

Angelina and Olivia were working together. They stood next to Alicia and Annabel, and Olivia told Angelina to try it.

'Flippendo!' Angelina said clearly, pointing her wand at Olivia. Nothing happened - well, except Angelina's wand flipping out of her hand.

Angelina laughed nervously, and picked up her wand again. 'Alright, you go,' she said to Olivia, smiling.

'Flippendo,' Olivia said, and Angelina flew backwards, falling flat onto her back a few feet away from where she had been standing.

'Oh, my god, I'm so sorry!' Olivia gasped, rushing to help her friend up, but they were both laughing. As were Alicia and Annabel.

Professor Morehouse came along. 'Girls, practise the spell, please.'

'Oh, Olivia's got it.' Said Alicia through her laughter.

'Oh, well please, show me!'

'Okay.' Olivia looked to the others with a mischievous glint in her eye. None of the four liked Professor Morehouse very much...

Olivia stepped back, so that Morehouse was a few feet away from her. 'Flippendo!' She pointed her wand at the teacher.

The unsuspecting Professor was thrown backwards five feet - this spell had been more potent that the one that Olivia had cast on Angelina.

Everyone in the class stopped talking and moving as Professor Morehouse's robes flew out around her and she lay on the floor. Eyes everywhere darted from Olivia, to Olivia's wand, to the stunned teacher.

The whole class burst out laughing simultaneously.

Even Fred and George were laughing.

Professor Morehouse just looked angry.

'You.' Her eyes were fixed on Olivia in a death glare. 'Come with me. Now. The rest of you, stay out of trouble.'

Olivia could only think of one muggle word, that just so happened to be four letters long, and begin with the letter, 'F'.
