"Please? Pretty please?" Hands clapped together, your eyes scrunched closed as you pleaded loudly with the women in front of you.

"You know I don't like you out in the dark-" She sighed, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear.

"I know I know but... I'm almost seventeen now, I can handle myself. It's not even that late, just eleven o'clock." You continued arguing for your case as you slowly opened your eyes to look up at her. Biting your lip, you watched her hum and think while not meeting your gaze.

"Fine." The single word shocked you, your eyes widening as your smile followed suit. Excitement jolted through you and you barely caught what she said after that. "I'll give you a chance, but you better be home before midnight- Ah!" A surprised gasp escaped her as you wrapped your arms around her torso for a moment before pulling away to run to your room while calling back.

"Thank you!" You only heard a muffled 'You're welcome' as your bedroom door closed. Full of joy and a feeling of victory, you threw yourself onto your bed to laugh.

Your parents weren't really strict, in fact they were really relaxed and had given you a lot of freedom for as long as you could remember. They were far from neglectful or anything, they just allowed you to grow up responsible and independent. Sure you might not be the most mature, after all you're giggling and rolling on your bed at this very moment, or the most brave, strong, outgoing person but hey you could handle going out at night.

It wasn't even really going out, all night you'd be in safe secure buildings with plenty of other people around. Until it was time to go home that is, but that shouldn't be a problem. You were sure you'd be fine, even if your mom was really nervous.

She had every right to be though, it was getting really dangerous in this area. Serial killers, according to the news they suspected at least three or four different ones based on murder methods. A chill ran down your spine at the thought. It was pretty scary, knowing there was several killers on the loose and for the past couple weeks there had been one murder a night at the very least. Your laughter had stopped by now as your thoughts trailed off.

You didn't want to die, or risk dying. You'd told yourself it was fine, it wouldn't be that late and you wouldn't be alone. Besides from what you'd heard there hadn't been any murders in this area of the city so far. Which either meant you were completely safe or doomed.

Sighing, you sat up and glanced out the window. The sun high in the sky signaling it was around noon. All your excitement seemed to drain from you as you thought more on the subject.

No, you can't sit here and get scared. You and your friend had planned several activities to do, starting and ending with getting snacks from your favorite cafe. The thought of what you planned to order distracted you for the time being.

Pushing yourself off the bed, you headed over to your closet to get dressed. You were supposed to meet your friend in less than an hour and keeping them waiting wasn't a good idea.

Once you threw something on, simple and casual since you were only hanging out with a friend and not even doing anything that special, you went to the bathroom down the hall. You brushed your teeth and your hair before handling everything else you needed to.

Most people would regret sleeping in until noon and today you were one of those people. Summer break started a few days ago and you were way too excited, last night you stayed up until five AM binge watching a show on Netflix. Not your proudest moment but hey you couldn't just stop with all those cliffhangers and story arcs!

With everything ready you ran down the hall to the living room, where your mother was watching TV. Anyone else in your family was likely at work or out, the only ones home were you and her. You because, no school of course, and her because, she had Fridays off of work.

When she saw you ready she sighed, still not happy with her decision but knowing she couldn't take it back. You on the other hand were grinning as you scrambled to grab the last minute essentials. Phone, shoes, jacket. On second thought, it was summer you didn't need a jacket. You left it on it's hook and headed to the front door.

"I'm leaving mom!" You called as you opened it, almost recoiling at the sun's harsh rays.

"Alright, be back before midnight please." Her voice was full of worry as she gave you one last okay to leave. Knowing her she'd try to stay up and wait for you, but it was more likely she'd fall asleep on the couch than anything.

As the door clicked behind you, you breathed a sigh of relief. You weren't much of an outdoor person, or a socializing person, but sometimes it was nice to go out. And nice to get away from your mother. Sure she was nice but sometimes her questions about your future and relationship status got incredibly stressful and overbearing.

You shook it off, not wanting to think about anything right now except the path to the little cafe a few blocks away. It was daytime so it was perfectly okay to take the alleyways, the shortcuts that are dangerous at night. It cut your trip time in half, from thirty minutes to only fifteen. In no time you approached the small brick building with a large sign reading 'Dessert Dreams'.

The sign alone, decorated with an image of a cupcake, was making you hungry. Or maybe that was because you hadn't eaten today and just took a fifteen minute walk. Regardless you were ready to stuff your face with some sweets.

The door chimed as you walked inside and were immediately hit with all kinds of delicious scents. After taking a moment to enjoy, you spotted your friend at the usual table in the corner and grinned. You raised your arm to wave while bouncing over to take the seat across from her. Immediately you jumped into conversation.

Today was going to be a great day.
