You'd been right, today had been an amazing day. There wasn't a moment where you weren't smiling or laughing with your friend as you visited every pre-planned stop. You hadn't seen them since summer started and this made up for the that. It didn't quite make up for the fact that tomorrow they were leaving, going on vacation with their family for most of the summer, but at least you had today.
Watching as they laughed over the video you guys were watching on their phone, you couldn't help but giggle yourself. Which caused you to choke on your treat for a moment until you recovered. The cafe you'd started in was where you found yourself now. They were open until eleven, which is when you guys had decided to depart. It was also the time that was slowly approaching.
"Kids please finish up, we're closing soon." The waitress's voice interrupted your laughing fit. Your friend sighed and set their phone down to go back to finishing their cake. You followed suit, despite not liking the awkward silence that filled the building now.
Soon enough you were being ushered out by that same waitress. The last ten minutes before closing had been silent, neither of you wanting to talk about what was happening. You'd be apart for almost two whole months.
Standing on the sidewalk in front of the cafe, the two of you had a short conversation about how you'd hang out a lot more when they came back. You were so distracted by excitedly making plans you didn't notice anything else, certainly not the figure that walked past you.
"I better head back, my parents are going to flip when they find out I stayed out late instead of packing." They pointed behind them, taking a few steps back. You nodded, giving them silent permission to go.
"See ya later!" You waved and watched them go down the street. Their house was a lot closer than yours, and not near any alleys, so it was safer and quicker for them. For you? Not so much. Glancing around you suddenly realized how small and alone you felt on the dark street. You regretted not grabbing your jacket, the cold air blowing against your skin gave you chills. It was five past eleven now, according to your phone which hardly had any battery left. Watching videos and constant parental check up all day tended to drain it. You really needed to hurry home.
Turning around, you headed in the direction opposite to your friend. For a moment you hesitated. Do you take the long way just to be safe or the shortcut to get out of this creepy darkness faster? The longer you stood in place the more paranoid you got. Finally you forced yourself to choose and stepped forward.
The shortcut. It was darker and more likely to be dangerous but it was a hell of a lot faster. You didn't want to be out here any longer. You might catch a cold or worry your mom more. While you're at it the remaining members of your family should be home now too, great more people to worry and ask if you're okay when you show up just fine.
You really thought everything would be fine, you'd been walking for a few minutes and even if it was creepy and you were paranoid, you were fine. You knew you could handle yourself and everything would be perfectly alright.
A strange sound interrupted your victory thought. It sounded like... squishing? Sloshing? Someone interacting with something liquidy or squishy. It hadn't rained today, there shouldn't be any puddles of water. Maybe someone spilled something? Several possibilities ran through your mind, all of them innocent and plausible. With those in mind, it seemed fine to continue and walk around the corner to inspect.
In hindsight you should turned around, ran back the other way to be safe. Or hell even just getting your phone and calling your mom. You didn't have much battery but it'd be enough for a call. But no, you're foolish naive self had walked straight into this mess.
Instantly a gross scent laced with iron invades your nose, causing your face to scrunch in disgust. In the darkness of the alley, illuminated by a single street lamp a good twenty feet away, you could see two figures. One sprawled on the ground and unmoving, the other crouched over it.
Again scenarios started to fill your mind. A simple mugging? An accident? It couldn't be a murder, could it? No this area should have been safe, and it wasn't even that late. Despite your attempts at comforting yourself panic started setting in and your hands began to shake. As the crouching figure started to move a bit you heard that squishing sound again. At this point you were desperately praying they'd stand up and be holding a purse, a wallet, money, something to indicate this was just a mugging and that other person was hopefully only unconcious.
They did stand up, quite quickly actually, but what they held wasn't any of the desired items. What you saw made your blood run cold, you wanted to flee but found yourself frozen in fear. In the criminal's hand was a pink object dripping with blood. You were no medical expert but you had enough common sense to tell you that was a kidney. This person had just taken a kidney out someone!
All hope that this was a mostly innocent act faded and a short whimper escaped your lips. It took moments to realize your mistake. Your hands flew to cover your mouth but the stranger had already looked up. You don't know how much time past but it seemed almost instantaneous when his form appeared in front of yours.
They were tall, not just taller than you but taller than the average person, at least six feet. Their entire body was covered in black clothing aside for two places, their neck which was an odd grey color and their face. Covering their face was a blue mask, no nose or mouth to indicate expression, only eyes. Or what were supposed to be eyes. In reality it was just two empty voids with some black substance dripping out. A chilling sight, one that made you want to scream and run.
But your voice was caught in your throat and your feet stuck to the ground in terror. You couldn't see his expression but they seemed to be looking you over. After what felt like hours of silence, a noise escaped them. Was that... A chuckle?
"Normally." Their voice was calm, and somewhat deep, definitely masculine and definitely scary. While you could hear the words perfectly he was really speaking in nothing louder than a low whisper. "I'd kill a witness immediately." Those words sealed your fate, you were sure. Tears welled up in your eyes. "However... If you can keep a secret, I will spare you." If you could focus more you'd notice a hint of amusement in his tone.
You had no idea his intentions, how he simply wished to play with you and expected you to run off and tell the police. He expected to visit you the next night with his sharp scalpel in hand. It's not like you knew too much, nothing too risky for him, so this gamble would be okay. If he was lucky, he just earned himself another meal.
All you were thinking right now was whether or not he was serious. Any chance to live you'd take it. No matter what happened later, which you didn't want to think about. Finding the will to move you frantically nodded in agreement, unable to verbally promise to keep quiet. You couldn't tell his reaction, his response hidden by that emotionless mask, but he didn't move to stab you.
"Good. Remember your promise little one." Was he teasing you? You weren't sure and didn't have enough time to think it through. Right after he'd finished speaking there was a rapid blur of movement followed by a sudden pain in the back of your head.
And then everything went black.
