You woke up alone of course, Jack had left you lying across your bed backwards, something that felt odd when you noticed it. What was more odd was the small box sitting next to you, plain black and thin. Where did it come from? Had your mom left you a gift? It seemed like something she'd do, especially after what happened the other night.
Pulling yourself to sit up, you stretched your arms behind your head before taking the mysterious package into your hands. Feeling confident that it was from your mom you pulled the top off quickly. It didn't take more than a second to determine it wasn't from her. Inside the lid read 'Wear this so whenever you think I'm not real, you can remember I'm always there', obviously from Jack. Any other context might have made it seem sweet, but hearing it in the killer's voice made it a little creepy.
The real contents of the box was a simple dark blue ribbon. The exact shade was one you wouldn't normally pick for anything yourself but it made you smile for some reason. "Ah!" A sound of discovery came from you as he realized, it was the same color as his mask. No wonder he said it'd remind you of him. But how are you supposed to wear a ribbon?
In your hair? No you didn't think it'd look right, too childish. Around your wrist? That'd be really hard to tie constantly. Around your neck? You'd seen 'fashionable' scarves that more or less looked like they were just ribbons around the girl's necks. You decided that would work and approached your mirror to tie it on yourself. Soon a cute bow sat on the right side of your neck, the ribbon felt somewhat nice and not restricting.
Once you felt it looked nice, you exited your room and headed to the bathroom. The trip resulted in you realizing you were out of toothpaste. Your parents were at work, or somewhere, and wouldn't be able to bring some home yet but you really needed to brush your teeth. Jack had become a nightly distraction and usually you were left to tired in the mornings to remember, this was a rare occasion. You couldn't go another day without doing this, which meant going to buy your own toothpaste. At a store. Outside.
No calm down, you could do this. There was a corner store just a block down, it was mid morning, everything would be okay. You repeated this to yourself as you gathered what you needed. Shoes, phone, wallet, jacket since the morning breeze could get cold. Then you double checked that you had everything just to delay your departure even more. Finally you couldn't fool around anymore, you were determined to get this necessary item. You might as well get some more shampoo too since you remembered you were low.
You sent a quick text alerting your mom of your plan before exiting the house, making sure to lock it behind you. The walk was a little nerve wracking but it was somewhat nice. Quiet, breezy, and relaxing in most ways. The fact that it was much brighter outside than it had been on your last walk made it a lot easier on you. Cars driving around and animals making noise provided small distractions from your fears.
After a short amount of time you made it to the start of a street lined with stores. Walking down and looking into all the windows you stopped when something caught your eye. You wondered if you had the money to get it, you weren't sure how much you had but you felt like you deserve some kind of gift after all you'd been through.
Just as you were about to pull out your wallet to check you heard someone call your name. You lifted your head and turned, half in surprise and half in fear. Thankfully it was just a guy from school, someone who had been in a few of your classes. You never talked outside of school but you still considered him a friend.
"Oh, hi Jake," you give a soft reply, letting a smile grace your worried expression as you look over him. His blond hair was a mess, in a cute way, and his blue eyes shined like the ocean. Once upon a time, back near the beginning of last school year, you may have had a crush on him. While you didn't know if the feelings still remained you did know he was attractive and kind.
"Hey. How's your summer been?" He grins, an aura of cheerfulness coming off him. Though it soon fades as his eyebrows scrunch up slightly in concern. "Are you alright? You look really... off."
Of course it was obvious how nervous and shaken up you were, you were holding your arms close to your body and glancing around in paranoia every few seconds. You couldn't help it, you held yourself up in your room for several weeks out of pure terror. Knowing you couldn't brush it off, you simply sighed and brushed some hair behind your ear before speaking.
"Um at the beginning of the summer I kind of... Had a small run in with a serial killer? I talked to the police a few times and I guess it's still getting to me..." As you talk your breathing hitches for a moment, your body growing colder as you replay all the events as quickly and coherently in your head as possible.
"Shit that's messed up, I had no idea. Are you okay?" He stepped closer to you, his voice dropping quieter as he looked over you to make sure you didn't get hurt. The gesture made you smile more, this was a nice interaction, definitely more relaxing than your talks with Jack. Even though those had been getting a lot nicer lately.
"I'm fine... Really. But uh what about you?" You grasp at the easiest possible subject change, not wanting to risk a slip up in your story. Jack would kill you if you said something to anyone, and you couldn't even say that in a joking way.
"I've been alright, just hanging out with friends." Though he still looked worried he gives a nonchalant shrug. "I was looking for someone to hang out with today, interested?" The smile he flashes is the warmest thing you've seen in some time.
"I was just going to the store... But I have some time to spare. I shouldn't stay out too long though, I promised to be back soon." Not exactly a lie, you told your mom you were leaving and you told yourself you'd be back quickly. It wouldn't be as bad now that you had Jake with you, but you never know when you'll get an early visit from a certain killer. Leaving him alone in your house just sounded like a horrible idea.
"Awesome! I was gonna pick up some games if you wanna head there first?" He seemed to have cheered up more once you agreed, and even held his hand out. Hesitantly, though much less hesitant than the times you reached for Jack, you placed your hand in his. A warmth filled your face as you smiled and walked along side him.
Things started out a bit awkward, you didn't really look up from your feet or talk to others much. He was patient, after what you told him it was easy to understand your anxiety. As time went on you got more comfortable socializing though. It was nice to be out again, especially after the last time ended so badly.
Your best friend had no idea what your special outing resulted in for you, you didn't want to ruin her vacation by telling her. Besides, she didn't have cell service at the moment yet anyway. She'd said you two could talk later on, when she could reach a computer for emails, but you haven't heard from her yet at all.
Save for remembering that, the day was quite enjoyable. Guys don't usually like shopping much, not that you really did either, but you'd mostly stayed in that area checking out stores. He even bought you lunch, your first time eating out recently and the greasy fast food was the same as always, in a good way. With how much fun you were having you nearly forgot about the reason you came outside until you passed the corner store that had been your original destination.
He seemed amused at your memory as you ran in to grab the toothpaste and shampoo, as well as a candy bar to eat later. Once you returned he hadn't even asked before taking your bag to carry in one hand, his other reaching over to grab a hold of yours. You weren't sure why he'd been so affectionate, almost flirty, today since he'd never shown much interest in you before. It wasn't a bad thing, you did like him a little bit, but some part of you felt odd like you didn't want to be holding his hand but someone else's.
For just a second you thought of Jack and your face flushed immediately. Why would you want to hold his hand? They were gross and bloody right? Then again you'd never touched them since he kept his gloves on all the time. Maybe that's why you wanted to hold them, curiosity's sake. It couldn't be you having a crush on him. You'd deny that until the end of time, even if you were starting to accept it more.
It was just after sunset as the two of you walked home, his voice filling the eerie silence as you stepped closer to him out of fear. You didn't plan on being out that late, but you didn't regret it. Even if it nearly resulted in you being out at night again.
You were just a few houses away from your home when you heard a violent rustle in a nearby bush. With a jolt you closed your eyes and hid against Jake. The blond pat your back and assured you it was fine but it still took a moment for you to relax and calm down enough to keep walking. He didn't question when your pace got faster.
Finally stepping onto your doorstep you were open to unlock the door when he interrupted you. He wore that same smile he'd had all day.
"Today was really great. We should do it again sometime." You nodded in agreement and smiled back at him. "I should get going, good night." Before you could say the farewell right back he leaned down to kiss your cheek, just for a second, and then was gone before you knew it. The gesture flustered you so much you hardly acknowledged your fluttering curtains as you opened the door.
As expected the house was still empty, and for once you were glad. You didn't need anyone teasing you about being out with a boy, or acting as if it was a miracle their daughter had a 'date'. With a tired sigh, you dropped your supplies off in the bathroom, nearly forgetting to put the candy in your pocket, before entering your room.
You really should have expected it, and normally you would have, but Jake's little kiss had your mind in a flurry. As such you screamed upon seeing someone in your room. For some reason he hadn't bothered to turn on the light, so the silhouette in the darkness was quite terrifying until you flicked the switch yourself. That didn't help much, seeing those empty sockets staring at you again only sent a chill down your spine.
"[Y/N]." His voice was calm, serious, more so than usual. It scared you stiff, not taking a single step closer to him.
"J-Jack." You reply quietly, unable to tear your eyes away from him.
"Who was that boy?" You almost whimper, his tone gets so cold and almost angry. Had he seen Jake? How? Why was he so upset? Did he think you told on him?
"A-A friend from school... I-I didn't tell him about you I swear!" You finally take a step forward, hands raises in defense.
"I didn't think you did but I don't care. Why was he so close to you?" He stood up, frighting you even more at his full height.
"... I-I'm not sure. Maybe he has a crush on me?" Your suggestion was soft, as if you didn't even believe your own words.
"He can't." For just a moment you were ready to get offended, taking his claim as an insult until he continued. "You are mine." He stated it with such certainty you almost agreed, almost.
"Wh-What?" His only answer comes in the form of a gesture, his glove covered hand pointing to the ribbon around your neck.
"Mine." Of course, he'd claimed some weird ownership of you hadn't he? You were just some toy he'd claimed before anyone else. It made you angry to think about.
"He doesn't want me as a toy like you Jack, h-he wants me as a girlfriend!" Again you were guessing, not even sure of Jake's feelings but you had a point to make to the monster in front of you.
"... Girlfriend." He murmured quietly, seemingly to himself as if trying to remember the word. With the smallest shred of confidence you continue.
"Y-Yeah, girlfriend. As in a mutual romantic relationship. Kissing, hugging, going on dates. Not breaking into their house and threatening to kill them if they tell people about you!" What Jack had been doing, yes it was the opposite of what boyfriend's did and it was really wrong, but you'd started getting used to it. You couldn't say it bothered you as much as before, though you were still scared you'd ended up more scared of him leaving you.
"... I concede." Your eyes widened a bit and you blinked in surprise. He was giving up? No more arguing? You hardly got a moment to retort back before he was climbing out the window again. He was gone by the time you called his name.
After a moment it all set in. You'd upset him, he was mad at you. He was probably going to kill more people because of you. Whatever he saw you ask, likely just a toy, he didn't want to share. That could almost be flipped to seem sweet, if not for coming from a murderous creep.
Before going to bed, or trying/failing to sleep, that night you'd made a silent promise to yourself.
You wouldn't talk to Jake again.
