They say curiosity killed the cat. Well damn were you sure it was going to kill you. You'd started wanting to know so badly you couldn't stop thinking about it, but you were sure if you asked you could end up as dead as the cat. After seeing Jack's skin, you'd gotten even more curious than ever before about what his face looked like under his mask. Obviously it was probably grey but what else? His mouth, nose and most importantly eyes. What were they really like?
You'd been deep in thought about this really all day, only getting distracted for chunks of time by various things online. But overall, it was always in the back of your mind. You couldn't help but imagine so many possibilities. For a few moments you toyed with the chance he just had a normal face, but that thought was soon pushed away by horrific images of what he could look like. Your own thoughts were starting to scare you so much that you needed to know the truth.
Even after deciding that, your confidence faded when Jack showed up. It was a bit early, just after sunset, but it was supposed to rain tonight so it made sense he'd want to avoid it. Rain in the summer was rare, and weird, but it'd likely result in humid weather the next day which would be awful for everyone. You wondered if it being hot outside affected someone naturally cold, you'd have to ask that at some point to.
You pulled your feet up closer to your body as he sat down on your bed after closing the window, aka his 'door'. The topic burning your mind sat on the tip of your tongue yet you couldn't say it. Maybe you should see if he's in a good mood first?
"Hey." The greeting is short and you feel stupid for even saying it. It really wasn't something either of you usually did, you'd just start talking about stuff rather than waste time with greetings or anything. However he doesn't seem upset by your use of one and his response is almost cute.
"Hi." He sounds a little awkward when he says it, as if he's questioning whether or not he did it correctly. Guess that's something else he's not used to.
Silence flows over the room but neither of you are uncomfortable, it's normal after all. During the quiet moment, you fidget your feet around a bit while trying to work up the courage to ask your desperate question. You're sure if not for his mask Jack would be raising an eyebrow at your actions.
"Is something wrong?" Though his tone is flat, more confused than concerned, part of you felt like he really did care, at least a little bit. No, that wasn't the point right now.
"N-No! Everything's fine-" You can tell as the words leave your lips he's not convinced. You'd been able to somewhat lie to him before but even you could tell from your squeaked voice what you said wasn't believable. "F-Fine, I was just..." You take a breath, preparing for the worst as a reaction to this. "Was wondering what you looked like... without your mask." By the end you're practically whispering but within the silent walls of your room he manages to hear clearly.
"Hmm..." He hummed in thought for a moment, slowly bringing his hand up to rest against his mask. "Are you sure you want to see? I wouldn't want you thinking of me as a monster again." Damn him and his hard to read tones, serious or playful you can't tell, but you bite your tongue to hold back your response.
'I never stopped', he doesn't need to hear those words, it'd only end badly for you. "... I'm sure." You did your best to sound determined since well, you were. It was the only way to satisfy your curiosity and put an end to your horrifically active imagination about the subject.
To your surprise, he complied with your request. Slowly he began to move the mask. First he revealed the lower part of his face, his mouth visible. Of course, as expected, his skin matches his arms. His lips are a lifeless grey as well, you can't help but think about how cold they'd be to touch. That thought instantly brings a faint blush to your cheeks, of course you'd take your own thought wrong. No way in hell were you kissing a serial killer!
Focusing again, he'd pulled his mask over his nose. The feature was smaller than expected but kind of cute, and it wiggled slightly as he focused on getting the mask off. So far his face looked pretty much human, you felt quite relieved. However the biggest question, the biggest mystery, still remained. His eyes.
As the blue mask slid off his face completely, getting set on the bed next to him with one hand while the other knocked back his hood to release those beautiful brown locks, your mouth fell slightly agape. Honestly, it was the last thing you expected but it was still better than many of your own ideas. His eyes were simply just...
Empty black sockets.
Dark voids dripping the same black on his mask.
All this time, you'd really been looking at his without knowing. It was amazing how well they just seemed to go with the mask, but you guessed that unmoving sockets could easily look fake. You had no idea what the black goo(?) dripping down his cheeks was but you're not sure if you wanted to know.
His lips curled into a slight smirk, he was taking in your silent reaction, watching you stare at him. Something about seeing his expression, actually knowing his emotions, sent a chill down your spine and made your heart skip a beat. It didn't get any better when he leaned forward slightly, not quite touching you but trying to scare you by being so close.
Staring into that pure black, which seems too dark to be real, is starting to unnerve you a bit now that you know the truth but really you'd already grown accustomed to it. The long streaks of weird goop were creeping you out a bit though, you tried not to show it. In the end he really had been a monster in every sense of the word, no way he could be human with what you know now. You had to admit, some of the now faded fear was starting to crawl back. But not enough to scream, or run or freak out.
"... Can you c-clean that stuff off at all?" You spoke up meekly, wanting to show you weren't as scared as he thought. For someone who seemed to enjoy scaring you, had a feeling he liked it better when you weren't scared. This theory was only backed up by his devilish expression turning to a small smile as he pulled away. You couldn't help but glance at his discarded mask, making sure none of the black got onto your bed.
"It comes back shortly but yes, I can." He replied calmly as he reached up with his dark sleeves to wipe his face. For just a moment there was no goo, just black sockets and a clear view of a mostly normal face. Ignoring his eyes and skin tone, which was hard, he might be kind of attractive. You smacked yourself mentally for the thought but it was true. Only a moment later a small amount of goop hung at the bottom of his sockets. It wasn't dripping down his face entirely though so it was an improvement. "Is that better?"
You nodded, but noticed something as he spoke. All his teeth were pointed like fangs, as if he had razor sharp shark teeth. That make you a little more uncomfortable. Who needs a weapon, which he'd never shown around you beyond that first meeting, when you have teeth that could probably kill someone! Even knowing he'd never tried to hurt you, you still felt slightly on edge.
Yet all in all, you'd expected worse so this was okay, sort of. At least Jack hadn't gotten mad, and he seemed slightly more comfortable without his mask on. You wondered if he realized you could now tell how he felt easier, but didn't want to bring it up.
"... You don't look too bad... Ya'know, for someone without eyes-" The comment was meant to come out as a soft compliment but the mumbled finish escaped without thought. Yet he seemed to laugh, or it looked like a little closed mouth laugh.
"For someone without eyes, I happen to think you are also quite pleasing to them." The sudden, almost flirty, compliment reply caught you off guard and your face flushed red. It hadn't even mattered that it came out slightly awkward, Jack had looked away slightly as he spoke. So maybe being called pretty by an insane organ thief wasn't on your bucket list but you appreciated it still. You weren't complimented often, not like you were insulted either, you were usually just kind of there. This felt nice. You felt yourself begin to smile despite your continued blushing.
Jack had made you happy.
