"HE DIDN'T HIT ME." Was the first thing I said. I wanted him to know firsthand, so he wouldn't freak out.
He let out a long breath letting me know I had made a good call. Then I took one too and started.
"Thanksgiving meal had gone well, no incidents for once. But everything went to hell about six in the afternoon. My brothers were playing baseball outside, well, their kind of baseball anyway, as they don't know the rules and clearly don't have enough players to play a normal game, they invented a new one. But of course, this new game also included throwing and catching the ball, and they had the misfortune of hitting my father's car. I don't know what it was doing in the driveway, he always left it inside his garage, I can't understand why he left in the driveway today. My father and I heard the loud noise and headed outside, my mother was in the grocery store so it was just the four of us..."
"What have you done?!" My father yelled when he saw the crack in his windshield. The ball hadn't gone through the glass though, but it had left a nasty mark on it.
This was not good.
"We are sorry, it was an accident, Nicholas threw the ball too high and I couldn't catch it." Sean explained. Nick was already hiding behind him. It was always like this, Sean would speak up and tried to explain while Nick stood quiet, terrified of my father.
"You, little piss of shit!" He said and started walking towards them. They were scared, I was scared too cause my mother wasn't home and he was more of a monster when that happened. He had more control of himself when she was around, considering what she had done to him in the past.
When he got to them he lifted Sean from the floor and started shaking him. "You don't get to do shit like that and then be fucking sorry about it!" He yelled.
He was crying by then, nick was too, they were petrified. My father dropped him to the floor. He let out a cry of pain, I think he hurt his ankle. Yeah, he was grabbing it. Now, my father turned to Nick and he flinched when he raised his hand.
I couldn't let him touch my little brothers. What the fuck was I doing? I had to DO something.
"Stop it!" I screamed. He turned around and faced me.
"What did you just say to me?" He asked furious and astonished. He wasn't used for me to stop him. He wasn't used to anyone telling him what he could and couldn't do, actually. That was his main problem, he wanted to be on top of everyone, to walk over them and not face any consequence. Sometimes I think that if my father would have been a present or a king he would be able to end the world with his ambition for power. Thanked god he wasn't anywhere near something like that.
"I said... Stop. Hitting. My. Brother." I answered him in a loud voice. This was the time to speak up, and clear, just like he always wanted me to do.
"Shut up." He ordered. Of course, he wanted me not to shout, so that the neighbors wouldn't hear me.
"Nick, take Sean and get inside the house." I told Nick. He did it. My father was too concentrated on me to say anything to them.
I wanted to follow them, to get away from my father. I looked to his face and panicked.
I should have kept my mouth shut.
No.
Then what? Let him hurt my brothers like that? No more. I did the right thing. I was their big sister and I had to defend them.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" He asked veraciously.
I didn't answer that. It was one of THOSE questions.
