Surprise Dinner

That night Mom let Chloe pick the restaurant and ended up going to Patsy's Pies. My Mom asked Chloe and me to put in a bit of effort so we did and Chloe decided to wear her hair in braids along with a cute dress and a thick pair of tights. I forced her to wear a coat and she wasn't happy at all until we got there and she could take it off. I switched my hoodie for a denim jacket and put on a bit of makeup before curling my hair.

"Thank you, girls," she smiled as we sat down. "You both look beautiful."

"So do you, Aunt Katie," said Chloe.

My Mom explained to Chloe that we were meeting her new boyfriend and Chloe was pretty excited for some reason. After a few minutes of waiting, an attractive, smart-looking man walked into the diner followed by a teenage boy. They didn't really look alike; the boy had olive skin, hazel eyes and curly hair while the man had light skin, dark eyes and short, straight hair styled smartly. The boy also wore glasses and looked a little awkward while the man seemed quite confident. Mom stood up to greet them and she and the boy shook hands. They sat down and we all got introduced. Christopher told them to call him Chris and his son was named Simon.

They sat down in front of us and we were stuck in a short awkward silence before the waitress, Jackie, came.

"Hi Jackie," smiled Mom.

"Katie, how are you?" she asked.

"Good thanks."

"What about you, Kirah? Chlo?"

"Not bad," I smiled.

Chloe just grinned at her and Mom said, "uh, this is my boyfriend Chris and his son, Simon."

Oo, boyfriend.

They both greeted her politely and Jackie smiled, "hi. So, what can I get you?"

I looked at Mom, "what's the budget?"

She was about to speak when Chris smiled, "it's on me so get whatever you want."

Chloe and I shared a cheeky look and I smirked, "okay, can I get a chocolate milkshake, a burger and fries and a side of onion rings please?"

"I'll have the same but make it a strawberry milkshake please," smiled Chlo.

Mom laughed, "you sure that you want to pay for all this, Chris?"

He took her hand, "of course."

She smiled, giving his hand a squeeze and everyone else ordered before we were in an awkward silence again.

"So," smiled Chris, "your Mom tells me that you guys are doing well in school?"

Chloe nodded while Kirah shrugged and said, "I guess so, I got a C+ in Biology the other day."

"That's great," he smiled. "What about you, Chloe?"

"I got an A on a Math test today."

"Oh wow, well done."

"Hey, well done, Chlo," smiled Mom.

I nudged her, "yeah good job, kiddo."

"How did Carl do?" asked Mom.

"Yeah he didn't do very well but I'm going to help him because I don't want him being held back next year."

"That's nice of you," I said.

"I'm surprised Lip doesn't help him," said Mom.

I shrugged, "he probably doesn't have time between helping me and Ian and meeting up with Karen Jackson."
