“Catch the pine cone Cas!” the little brown and white kit called to her brother. Cas leaped into the air, using his long hind legs to get higher. He grabbed it and landed with a thump that dusted his jet black fur and made the white streaks brown.

“Get it Meg!” Cas laughed and batted it to his smaller calico sister. Meg caught it easily and tossed it over to the brown and white kit again.

“Zara, can we go to the river?” Meg asks. The brown and white she-cat sighs.

“It’s a creek, not a river.” She mewed. “But fine. Let’s ask Ma first though, you remember what happened last time we just ran off.” She giggled and the three kits bounded close to each other. As usual Zara took the lead, leaving Cas and Meg to trail behind.

“Maybe we should ask Pa instead? He lets us do more things!” Cas suggested, trying to clean the dirt out of his fur.

“You’re probably right.” Zara agrees. “Come on; hurry up you pair of snails!” Zara bounds ahead, her short tail waving wildly. Cas and Meg exchange an amused glance and run after their sister. They catch up with her as she lows down in front of their mother and father, who are basking in the sun.

“Uh oh, looks like the kits are up to something again.” Amber chuckles and whispers loudly to Raven. Raven just flicks his muzzle with her tail tip and replies fondly,

“Oh shut up you. What can we help you with kits?” She looks at her son and daughters with a warm amber gaze.

“Um… Can we maybe… eh.” Zara stammers, suddenly uncertain. She wanted to go but was afraid to ask.

“Go on, say it. Can you what…?” Raven purrs, bending her head to groom her chest fur.

“Can we go to the creek please? To play? It’s too warm in the clearing.” Zara manages to say. Cas and Meg line up on either side of their sister, looking at their parents with hopeful eyes.

“I don’t know… Amber? What do you think?” Raven hesitates, turning to her mate. But Amber smiles and winks to his kits.

“I think they’ll be fine. This isn’t a Clan; they learn to take care of themselves by taking risks. I say they go.” He meows. The kits squeak happily but still turn to their mother again. Everyone knows she is the boss. Raven sighs and gives in.

“Oh, fine. Go ahead. But why don’t you ask Rosy and Sammy if they want to come as well?” she suggests.

“Sure thing! Thanks Ma!” Zara mews and all three kits bound up to nuzzle their parents before running off.

“Meg, will you go fetch Sammy? Me and Cas will get everything we need to go in the water!” Zara says to her sister. Meg nods and quickly bounds away to the open fields outside the woodlands that belonged to her family. Rosy was a friend of her parents and was raising her kit Sammy all alone. He was Meg’s age, but bigger in size. All four kits were now 5 moons and still growing. Cas was the tallest with his long legs but Zara was more like their father with a sturdy build. Meg was just a tiny bit shorter but the fastest of them all. She loved climbing trees just as much as Zara loved swimming and Cas loved hunting and climbing on rocks.

As Meg struggled under a thick bush she started to hear the voices of Rosy and Sammy. The pair were just finishing up a meal and starting to groom their fur in the thick heat. Meg bounded out happily and stood in front of them.

“Meg! How good to see you. How are your parents?” Rosy asks with kindness in her pale green eyes.

“They’re fine thank you. And you?” Meg replies politely.

“We’re just fine. I suspect you’re here for Sammy?” Rosy meowed and nodded to her boy, allowing him to run over. He greeted Meg with a gentle touch to her ear.

“Hey Meg! What’s up?” he asks. Sammy had the exact same pale green eyes as his mother and a short but sleek brown tabby coat. but instead of a gray coat he had a light brown tabby one. He was always in a good mood and great at coming up with games and solutions to problems. To Meg, Cas, and Zara he was nothing short of a brother.

“We’re going to the river to play. Want to come join us? Cas and Zara are getting everything ready now!” Meg explains. Sammy nods.

“Sure! Sounds great! Mama? Can I go?” He looks over his shoulder at his mother with a pleading look.

“Of course.” Rosy purrs. “But be safe, okay? Not too far downstream where the current is stronger.”

“Yes Ma! Thanks!” he bounces up and down with glee. “Let’s go, I’ll race you!” he purrs and takes off. Meg was quick to react and runs after him, not caring that her black, ginger, and white coat gets covered with dust and debris.

As the kits raced to their friends by the creek the sun shone brightly up in the sky. Only a few lazy clouds drifted by and everything was peaceful in the territory of Raven, Amber and the kits. Even Rosy, who was raising a kit all alone, was content in this idyllic home. Few enemies passed through and other than a rogue fox or badger there were only intriguing animals to the young kits. Deer and ferrets were the favorites, though the owls that flew through the night were fascinating too. But it truly did seem like the worst was over, and the evil that once haunted the mountain and forests surrounding was gone for good.
