One Year Ago

"Jacob, this is Miss Penny. Miss Penny, this is my son Jacob," Sang said as she introduced him to his kindergarten teacher. He had a tight hold on her hand and when Miss Penny dropped down in front of him, he grabbed Sang's leg with the other and tried to hide his face. "Sweetheart, it's ok. This is your new teacher."

"Hi, Jacob. I'm Miss Penny. There's no need to be afraid. We're going to have so much fun this year. Do you like playing with other kids your age?"

"He really is excited," Sang told her when Jacob didn't say anything. "He has five younger brothers but he hasn't had a chance to play with other kids, outside of the family."

"Oh my, six kids total," Miss Penny said as she stood up, "you must have your hands full."

"They're the sweetest kids, hardly any trouble at all," Sang told her with a slight smile. She was used to all the surprise looks some people gave her and even the harsh criticism from others. As long as her babies were happy, that was all that mattered.

She leaned down and tugged on Jacob's arm until he was standing in front of her. "You ready to explore your new classroom? I bet we can find lots of fun things around here."

He nodded at her, but hesitantly said, "Ok, Mommy."

They walked around the medium sized room, checking everything out. The room was spit into sections, with tables in the middle of the room. There was a play section that had lots of toys, a reading section with a few books, and even a dress up section. They walked to the tables to find his name tag. He picked up the goody bag that was beside it, saying a quick 'thank you' to the teacher as they continued on their tour of the room. They went over to the wall closest to the doors, where the cubbyhole's were. They found his and Sang put all of his needed supplies into it.

"Ok, baby. You ready to go?"

"Yeah, Momma. Can we stop by Uncle's for ice cream?"

"Yes we can, baby. I did promise you ice cream if you were good and you were very good the whole time we were in this room. Let's go say bye to Miss Penny and then we'll go."

They headed for the door where Miss Penny was standing. She was turned, facing out toward the hallway, talking to someone. As they came closer, Sang could make out the words being said. She stopped, halting Jacob behind her.

"I heard there was a new restaurant that opened up on Main Street," Miss Penny spoke in a soft, teasing tone.

"I heard about that as well," a male voice answered her. He didn't say anything else.

Miss Penny gave out a little laugh, as if he had said something funny. "We could go and check it out together. Say six tonight?"

"I'm sorry, but I'm busy tonight. Victor and I have to set up the after school program."

"Oh, but surely that won't take long. I don't mind waiting for you."

"That's ok, Miss Penny. I have to help Nathan after that. He's doing some remodeling and I promised to help him."

"Well," her voice dropped to a sultry tone, "we could always go this weekend."

Sang could feel her face heating up. She quickly turned Jacob around and walked toward the tables that were in the center of the room. She really shouldn't have done that in the first place. She shouldn't have listened in on someone's private conversation.

When Miss Penny turned from the doorway a few minutes later, Sang turned to face her. "I think we're all set here. This is a really nice room and I'm sure Jacob will really enjoy his first year of school."
