Chapter 6.5: Odagiri Marina

Everyone had already gone home and I am just about to finish cleaning the board when I suddenly heard a noise outside. I didn't want to be shaken by the ghost stories that have been told inside the campus so I calmly approached the door where I heard the sound.

"C'mon, Marina. You know how your popularity would rise if you date a popular high school guy like me."

"I told you, I-I don't want to!"

"Are you sure about that?"

I can feel her struggling from the other side. I quickly opened the door as I saw a guy in a highschool uniform forcefully pinning Odagiri-san to the wall.

"Excuse me, but high school students aren't allowed in this building. Especially, scumbags like you."

"H-ha!? How dare you say that, you insolent wench!" He raised his hand and was about to slap me as I smirked at his action.

"Try. You'll not only be kick out but might even be put to prison after hitting me for child abuse and trespassing the middle school building after they hear my scream."

"T-that's not possible! The faculty should have gone home by now!"

"Wanna bet? The faculty office is just beyond this corridor."

His face was obviously pale from fear. I could see his hands and legs tremble as Odagiri-san was watching.

"SENSEEEIIIIII! SOME PERVERTED HIGH SCHOOLER IS INSIDE THIS BUILDING!!! SENSEEEIIIIII!!!"

He suddenly ran so fast that his shoe fell off his foot. He had to get it back before totally running away. When there was no sight of him anymore, Odagiri-san suddenly laughed.

"Y-you liar.. hahahaha The faculty have already gone home and you know that, Misaka chan."

She knows my name...?

"My name..."

"Hm?"

"You know my name. "

"Of course, I do! Misaka chan always done her part for every school activity. Even returning the cones used for gym, you helped when everyone else who didn't participate like you wouldn't help at all."

"That was because the teacher said everyone should help put away all the equipment used."

"And you erased the board for the next subject when the cleaners assigned were both absent."

"Nobody else did it and the teacher said to erase before the next teacher comes in."

"The thing is, I don't think you're doing it because you're required to but because it is possibly part of your principle."

She's thinking too deep into things. I was really just doing those because I was told to do them.

"You always do it because you think it's right."

....she's on her own fantasy.

"That's why...Misaka-chan, please be friends with me!" She pleaded lowering her head to me.

W-why is a popular girl like her wanting to be friends with the likes of me--?

"I-I'm only a normal girl."

"I don't care about that! I think Misaka is a wonderful person. And that is enough for anyone to wish becoming friends with you. " She said with a smile on her face. I don't know if this will work but I sure would love to have that warm smile around on cold days like today.

The following days were filled with happiness. She introduced me to her friends and to everyone she knows. It's already time for physical education and right now, I am beside the ever popular Odagiri Marina.

"Neeee Misaka-chan~" she tilted her head to my shoulders. "I wanna eat cake today.."

"Odagiri-san, you'll become fat if you eat too much carbs."

"Ahhh, I don't care about that. I wanna eat cake! And I told you to stop calling me so formally. Call me Rina. Okay?"

"I don't think I'll get used to it so quickly, though. Wait. I remember something." I fished my pocket to get the coupon I had inside.

"I got this coupon at the new opening of a cake shop near the train station."

"F-fifty percent off!?!? Misaka chan we need to go after school!!! Pleaasssseeeee" lately, if she wanted something all she had to do was give me these unusually large pleading eyes. And it's frustrating because it really works on me!

"F-fine! But we have to go after I drop by the book I borrowed from the library." Don't get me wrong. It's not a book for studying but actually a novel.

"Yeeyyy~" she hugged me so tight I could die from suffocation.

"Takahashi, can you get me 10 cones in the equipment room!?" The teacher shouted from afar looking at me.

"On it!" I stood up from where we were sitting and headed to the equipment room. As I was about to go out, I heard some fmailiar voices outside that suddenly mentioned my name.

"Yeah, Takahashi is too sly. Is she trying to be a social climber now?"

"She's taking advantage of Marina's kindness."

"She disgust me."

I'm not going to lie, they said some pretty hurtful words. Nevertheless, I do not want to be wavered and I need to give the equipment to the teacher.

"You're the disgusting one here."

Another familiar voice appeared when I was about to open the the door.

"R-Rina!"

"Misaka never did anything to you yet here you are, talking garbage behind her back."

"But she was trying to use you! She's a social climber!"

"Shut up. If there was anyone who tried to use me it was you guys. That high school guy from the other day was your brother, right Yume-chan? I did a little background check on my own."

Silence and shame probably conquered their souls.

"Frogs don't usually fly but today might be an exception for all of you. Die, idiots."

"B-but Rina!"

"Don't call me that. Only Misaka can call me Rina."

This girl is actually stronger than I think she is. Foots were drawing further as I felt no more presence from the other side of the door. When I walked out, our teacher ran towards me with sweat covering her face.

"I thought something happened so I came to check."

"Sorry, sensei. I suddenly fell and wasn't able to stand back up for a while. Thankfully someone helped me." I said smiling while handing her the cones.

"You're weird today, Takahashi. But that's good. Keep it up!" She pat my back and went back to the activity she was conducting.

"Sorry to keep you waiting, Rina."

"O--- Omyyyy"

"What?"

"You called me Rina just now."

"I can't?"

"T-that's not it!" ..... "I'm happy. I'm so happy."

Her smile grew so wide that it pulled my lips to smile, too. I want to be friends with her. I really want to continue being friends with her. God, just this once. Let me be selfish and wish for her to stay with me forever. To be able to be friends with her 'til our hair turn white will be the best gift an average person could selfishly wish for.
