Memories That Haunt Me

I sit huddled against the blank, black wall, tears streaming down my cheeks. I watch the old man in the other corner of the square room, muttering to himself, from the dim light.

He looks pretty old, and he smells funny. His clothes are all torn up, and he looks unkept.

I smile grimly, at how naive i had been.

...He looks kind of like a wild animal.

16 - 17 - 18 - 19 - 20

Finally, i break down. "I don't understand whats going on. Tell me whats happening!" I whine, scared.

Silly child

The man stops muttering and looks at me as if noticing me for the first time. But stays silent, just sitting there staring at me like I'm an alien.

You are an alien you stupid, stupid girl.

I shrink away, "Your scaring me..." I whimper quietly.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10, I start my rounds of push-ups.

"Out of all the things you could be scared of," The man hesitates. "You chose me."

You say that, and yet you were even more scared of me then i was of you.

I sit up straighter, and wipe my tear-stained cheeks. "What do you mean?"

He shakes his head, looking away. "You don't understand. Your just a kid."

Make me understand.

I stand up, defiantly. "I am not! I'm 5 and a harf!"

His head rolls back, as he laughs.

I can't help but crack a small smile, listening to his laugh roll around in my head.

Five and a harf huh? Don't you mean half."

I say the words with him, my voice mingling with his.

I sit back down slowly, "Yeah, i guess so..."

The door rattles, and i shrink, bringing my knees up to my chest. "Whats going on?!"

The man tenses, and then looks at me. "They're going to take me away and kill me, but your going to stay here until they replace you."

So blunt, and yet she- no I -didn't understand

I look at him wide-eyed and fearful. "What?"
