Somebody That I Used To Know- Chapter Seven
Clara woke up to her phone ringing. She had fallen asleep on the armchair in the living room. She must have been dreaming. No. No. Why couldn't it have been real? Couldn't the universe let her have one moment of happiness? John. He was standing there so beautiful. It seemed so real, but the world couldn't always be the way she wanted it. As for the phone call, it was the hospital.
They must have been calling about it Alex. Answering it, she said, "Hello."
"Is this Miss Clara Oswald?"
"Yes. What is it?" She asked.
"It's about a Mister Alex McKnight. He was brought into the hospital earlier for..."
"What happened?! Is he okay?" Clara said frantically.
"He's going to be fine, Miss. We just need you to come in to sign a few papers." The employee explained.
"Oh. Thank you. I'll be right over." Clara ended the call and grabbed her keys, walking to her car. Realizing that she had time to think, she decided to reflect on her dream from the previous night.
She never expected to dream about John, much less think about him, ever again. But why did it have to be so perfect? It was like nothing with him had ever happened. He was just standing there, so beautiful. Clara wished it would have never changed. None of it was real, and she had to accept the fact of John being gone once again.
Turning into the hospital parking lot, Clara got a ticket and stationed the car in a spot near a lift. When she got in, there was a tall man with a clipboard standing there, but she couldn't see his face. So focused on Alex, she didn't care, and got out at the fourth floor.
Walking up to the front desk, Clara could only imagine what Alex was going through right now. Why her father ever thought he would hurt her was beyond her comprehension. Although, she never did understand her father when he was in his drunken state.
"Need some assistance, miss?" The woman at the desk asked.
"I was told that I just have to sign some papers for Alex McKnight." Clara replied.
"Oh, yes! Of course! Miss Oswald, is it? Right this way. I'll have
Jessica take you to his room to see him first if that's alright. We need to keep the papers in the room to keep them safe. I'm sure you understand."
"Oh...yes. That's fine!" She didn't know that they were going to do this. Not that she had anything to hide, but she wasn't sure how Alex would react after he had time to think about the event that took place. Would he still want to be with her? Would he just leave? But then she would be left with no one, and no one should be alone. All of these things ran through her head as she walked down the brightly lit hallway to his room.
Jessica stopped at the door and took out a key to unlock to door. Why was Alex locked in there? If it was the middle of the night, that would be understandable, but it was only a few minutes after one. Walking in, Clara could see that Alex was sleeping peacefully in the bed. He looked fine, except for a few bruises and a wrap around his abdomen. Looking on the board, she found that under the space for doctor, someone had written 'The Doctor'. A bit obvious, wasn't it? Maybe it was an inside joke at the hospital.
Picking up Alex's transcript, Jessica handed it to Clara and pointed out the papers she had to sign, and where the signatures belonged. She offered her a pen and left the room. Basically, all the papers had to do with her relationship with him and how she was involved in the incident. Kind of like a witness report. One question asked if there were any other witnesses, and Clara's mind went to the man who saved her. She didn't know his name, so she couldn't exactly put him down as a viable witness.
Alex began to stir as Clara finished signing the stack of papers and she walked over to him, making sure he was okay.
"Hey, Alex. How are you feeling?" She started, now knowing how he would respond.
"Hey, Clara. Sorry you have to see me like this. I'm okay though. They're keeping me pretty heavily sedated to keep the pain level down. The doctor actually recommended it. He seems really familiar, but I can't put my finger on it right now."
"It's fine. That's not important right now. At this moment, you need to get more sleep. I'll come back and visit tomorrow, I promise." She said as she kissed his forehead.
Clara reached for the door as the doctor was walking in, and she realized why Alex said he looked familiar. It was John. For real. In flesh and blood.
"Hello there, miss. Excuse me. I have to check on my patient. I take it you're a family member or a friend of some sort?" He asked. It was strange. It was as if he didn't remember her at all.
"John?" Clara started, just as she had in the dream.
"Not right now, please. I'm working, miss. But if you're not busy..." he leaned close to whisper in her ear. "Meet me in the café at two, Soufflé Girl."
