My name is Kalie. I live in Norwood, Ontario. It's a small town but I like small towns. You know everyone and everything is always the same. It was my first day being back at high school. I didn't want to be back. The herding of people scrambling to make it to their class on time. I unhappily dragged myself into my first class.
English.
I yawned as I was about to be bored to death by Mrs. Hilton. She waited for the bell to ring to start class.
"I'm going to hand out papers that your parents need to sign. I'll need to have these back at the end of the week. All signed and dated."
I grabbed a paper and pass the rest to the person behind me.
It was the first day of school. I was finally a senior.
I couldn't wait for it to be the last day of school. I glanced at the clock. Only five minutes past. It was going to be a very long wait.
Someone burst in through the door and sat in the seat next to me.
"Good morning class. My name is Mrs. Hilton. I'll be going over the rules in this class. Rule number one is if you are late you will have to stand in front of the class and tell us why you didn't make it here on time. Today will be no exception. What is your name?" Mrs. Hilton asked eyeing the guy next to me.
Someone was in trouble.
"Adam Gontier."
"Well, Adam. Can you please stand and let us know why you were late."
He stood and glanced at everyone in the class. "My alarm didn't go off. My mom woke me up but I only had ten minutes to get here so that's why I'm late." He said then quickly sat back down. Mrs. Hilton was about to speak but was interrupted by another person running into class.
Another person in trouble. Mrs. Hilton eyed him like a hawk.
"Tardiness will not be accepted in this class. Please stand and tell the class your name and why you were late."
He stood with no look of remorse but instead seemed very pleased with himself. "My name is Neil Sanderson. I was late because I was attacked by a clan of ninjas. They had me cornered but I outsmarted them and finally made it here in one piece." He said happily and sat back down.
The class cracked up in laughter. A guy was patting Neil on the back. I rolled my eyes. Adam noticed and smiled. I smiled in return and looked away.
Adam and Neil are best friends. Adam moved here to Norwood and started hanging out with Brad and Neil. They also played music together. They had their own band called Groundswell.
I had to admit they are good.
It was a five member band that included Joe and Phil. What they didn't know is that me and my best friends, Becca and Jessie, were also starting a band. We practiced all summer and felt we were ready to go public. I couldn't wait to see everyone's reaction. As I was daydreaming I heard Mrs. Hilton say, "Enough! Neil Sanderson! I will give you a warning and this will go for the rest of the class. There will be no class interruptions and if there is you will then find yourself in the principal's office. I will not tolerate disobedience. You will be in your seats before the bell rings working on your assignment that will be written on the board. No talking, no laughing, or any other interruptions. Class is for learning, not for playtime. Take out a sheet of paper and a pencil. Write down the rules that are written on the board for you."
I took out a sheet of paper and pencil. Adam taps me on the shoulder.
"Can I borrow some paper and a pencil. I didn't have time to bring anything." He whispered so Mrs. Hilton wouldn't hear him. "Sure." I said giving him what he needed. "Thanks. You're a life saver." He said as he accepted it gratefully.
We were given our first writing assignment until the bell rang and we were able to leave to the next class.
I went in search of my locker so I could deposit the onslaught of books and papers given to us in English. My two besties were there waiting for me.
"Come on. You take forever." Jessie complained. I smiled as I opened my locker.
"My first class was English. Adam and Neil were both late. It was funny because they had to stand and say why they were late. Neil said he got attacked by ninjas. The class laughed and then we got in trouble. How was your first class?" I asked waiting for a reply.
"Boring." Jessie chimed in.
"Mine was ok. I can't believe you have a class with Adam and Neil. They're both trouble makers. I almost got detention because of Neil last year. He thought it would be funny to scare Jeffery by putting a tiny grass snake on his desk. Jeffery freaks out and starts screaming like someone is trying to kill him. I pick up the snake and told Jeffery that the snake was harmless but that's when Mr. Hernadez came and saw me with the snake. He was angry at me for bringing a snake to school but I was trying to explain that it was Neil that bought the snake to school. Neil was laughing the whole time until Mr. Hernadez realized I was telling the truth and sent Neil to the principal's office. I never want to have a class with him again." Becca said as Adam, Neil, and Brad walk together to Brad's locker. Brad was the only one out of their group to bring school supplies. Adam and Neil were borrowing what they needed for the next class. Neil notices Becca glaring at him. He gave her a playful smile to rile her up. She shook her head in disgust. Adam noticing the two looked towards me and smiled. I rolled my eyes and smiled back. If they only knew we had a band too. I wondered what they would say.
"Later, after school, we can all meet up at my house and practice. I have new lyrics I want to try out." Jessie said.
"You read my mind." I said as I closed my locker. "We just have to survive the rest of our classes." I added as we went in search of our next class. This was going to be a long, boring day.
