We had been in the school for at least a week and our supplies were low already. I was sitting in the library reading a book and trying to forget about what was going on outside, then I heard gun shots. I got off the seat I was sitting in and looked out the window. A small group of about 6 were fighting the infected outside. They came to the school gates and looked at the locks. Just to be sure no one was trapped we put the keys in each lock to make it easier and quicker to open and lock them. The quickly opened the gate and ran in shutting it behind them. I set the book down and left the library. I quick stepped down the stairs until I was at the entrance hall and watching the door.
They opened it slowly and I hid behind one of the walls, they were talking.
"Okay be quiet and search the entire building." One of them ordered. "We go in twos." They all split up, 2 going up the stairs and 4 leaving the building altogether. I shouted up to the 2.
"Hey!" One panicked and shot at me. Luckily they were a shit shot. "We've checked the entire school, there isn't any infected. Except for the one under this building." I told them and they came back down and used a walky-talky to call back the others.
"How many is there here?" A short blond haired girl asked.
"11, give or take." I answered. "4 of us are immune. Me included, look." I showed them my arm and they all backed off, 2 of them pointing their guns at me.
"What the HELL?!" Our newest group member, the nurse, shouted at them.
"He's gonna turn." The leader of the group answered.
"He'd have turned by now. He's had the bite for over a week now." She told him standing in the way of his gun. "Jack." She whispered.
"Julie." He dropped his gun and hugged her. "I thought you were dead."
"I'm not. But mum..." She whispered, her eyes tearing up.
"I've been to the house." He told her. She hugged him tighter and her did the same.
"Is anyone else confused?" The entire team was nodding and Julie turned to me.
"He's my brother. He's a soldier." She turned back to him, "When did you get back from the barracks?"
"Ah about 5 days ago. How long have you been here?" He then asked her.
"About a week." I looked at the group, the team ranged in age, 2 of them were about my age, 1 was an elderly guy but looked able to stuff other elderly folk wouldn't and the other 3 were around 20-30 years old. I then took them to the canteen and offered them some of the small supplies we had but only the 2 my age took some. I went back into the dining area and sat with the original group of mine.
"Hey." They all just stared at me, like I was psychic. "What?"
"Who are they?" Laura asked.
"Oh just some survivors." Everyone looked at me like I was a dumb shit. "They let themselves in. If I had of let them in my head wouldn't have near been shot off." The 2 teens sat with us and the adults all sat together.
"Hey, I'm Missy." The short, blond haired girl with rosy cheeks and grey eyes introduced herself. "It's not my real name. But it's much better than my real name."
"And you?" Victoria asked the guy.
"I'm James, James Roberts." He had short brown hair and deep blue eyes. He was tall and had a little bulk.
"How long have you been together?"Daniel asked, both choking on their food.
"We aren't together." James quickly corrected.
"He meant, how long have you been a group. Surviving the zombies." Victoria told them.
"Oh like 3 days." Missy replied. "James has been with the group since the outbreak. Him and his sister." She pointed over to the girl with long bright red hair. "She's called Rae." James looked a little embarrassed.
"Why are you so embarrassed by that?" I asked him.
"Missy knows to much about me, is all." He replied. Missy was about to speak then James put his hand over her mouth and we could make out a small mumble which sounded like "Gay".
"We don't care for any of that." Louise told him. I heard Laura sigh and I looked at her and laughed. Everyone stared at me.
"Just remembered something funny." Was all I could think of, because it really wasn't funny unless you had my sense of humour then Laura laughed.
"You heard me. Didn't you?" She asked.
"Yep." And laughed some more. Okay you would have needed mine or Laura's sense of humour.
After I while of getting to know each other and laughing at each others, rare but funny, happy stories. Then we went on to discuss the things we missed. The Internet, TV, music, our laptops, Xbox's and PlayStation's. I looked over to the adults and they were talking about something, something they didn't want us to hear about. I tried reading their lips but I couldn't make out what the people with their backs to me were saying. I looked at the table and there was a map.
"Hey, Missy?" She looked up at me.
"Yes?" She said, her smile was a comfort to us all.
"What are you and the team doing?"
"Oh we're going to the docks and going to England." She told me. "But we are stopping off at places like here to rest." Everyone looked at me with the Buzz kill face. "Why?"
"Oh just wondering." I replied and without thinking I went over to the adults. "Why go to England? I mean, if we get enough supplies we can stay here until everything blows over."
"And where do you suggest we get the supplies?" Rae asked me.
"Well you could climb out into the houses behind the school and grab anything from there. And then go down to the shops down the road. Take whatever you can from there. And then..." I remember my mum had done the shopping the day before all the zombies attacked. Then I remembered Glen. "Shit, I need to go home. Now!" Everyone looked at me (I'm getting sick of it now) and Jack asked,
"Why?"
"My house has supplies and a few weapons and my dog is still there. I need to save him." I left the canteen and Jack, Julie and Missy all followed me out.
"Alright, we'll come with you." Missy agreed. And Rae got up, telling me it was a stupid idea.
