MYSTIC FALLS - PRESENT DAY

Damon had taken Athena upstairs quickly after she had questioned who Silas was, not wanting her to witness his anger.

But he didn't seem angry. He had fantasised about this day for 2000 years, but not once had he imagined that it would end with her not remembering him. Silas was heartbroken, he didn't understand how this could have happened.

Was it witches on the other side playing a cruel trick on him? Was it karma?

There was no way to be sure.

"All this effort and she doesn't even remember you," Stefan suppressed a smirk as he handed his doppelgänger a rather large glass of scotch. "So, what are you gonna do? Will you stay here or go?"

"I don't know yet," he shrugged. "But I do know that I'm not just going to leave her here with you and your brother."

"Why not? We both know she'd be safer with us."

"She may not remember me, but that doesn't mean I love her any less," Silas gulped down the rest of his drink. "Athena was my first and only love, and I will be damned if I ever let her go again."

Stefan's thick eyebrows pulled together in confusion, his usual brooding expression plastered onto his face. He didn't understand how Silas could be so heartless to the world, but open up his heart to a single girl. A girl who had been angry with him before she was put to sleep for over 2000 years.

"Tell me, Stefan, if you were in my position and Elena was Athena's, wouldn't you do the same thing?" Silas questioned after a long silence.

The younger Salvatore nodded, "I wouldn't think twice about it."

"Maybe we're not so different after all."

Stefan opened his mouth to disagree with the statement, but how could he deny what he knew deep down was true?
