The tall blonde woman, Penelope, reached for the room key that Damon held loosely. She turned on her heal and headed towards a different exit.
He watched as her long slim fingers struck a match against the side of the box, lighting the candle so that she could navigate her way through the hotel.
"You coming?" Penelope nodded towards Damon who caught up with her fairly quickly.
They walked through the dark corridors in silence, Damon too focused on the candle in her hands to make conversation. It was odd, he hadn't seen someone use candlelight for quite sometime.
She must have noticed him staring because she let out a soft laugh and began to talk.
"We're having a few power issues at the moment and the lights in the halls aren't working," Penelope gestured around with her hand that held the key. "The lights in the rooms work though. Most of the time."
Damon simply nodded in response, not quite sure how to reply.
"So, are you just staying for the night?"
By now he had noticed her slight accent and began to wonder where it was from. He couldn't quite place his finger on it.
"Uh, yeah. I've gotta get back on the road tomorrow," he nodded once more.
"You on a road trip or something?"
"Something like that. I don't know where I'm going, if I'm being honest." Damon wasn't sure why he was telling the woman he'd just met this, but he felt comfortable doing so. "All I know is I couldn't stay there. It was all so repetitive. I couldn't live like that."
"I know what you mean," Penelope offered a small smile. South Africa. That's where her accent was from. "When I wanted to get away from everything I came here."
Damon wanted to keep talking to her, he wanted to get to know her, but they had arrived at his room.
Penelope unlocked the door for him and handed him the key, giving him another small smile as they said goodnight.
He watched as her figure retreated back down the corridor until she was consumed by the darkness. Her face was imprinted in his memory, even after only having just met her.
But the words ringing through his head left chills running down his spine. They were quiet but he could hear them clearly throughout the corridor.
