chapter 1

sighing, Jonathan stared up at the waters surface through the window. He had always dreamed of going up there. Visiting the world outside the ocean. Like before. However, the law of our people stated the we were not to interact with the outside world.

But he wished he could.

"you've been sighing all day," a voice snapped me out of my thoughts, directing my attention towards Craig who was carrying an arm full of books. "sighing won't make it any better."

"what are you talking about?" Jonathan turned back.

He sat the books down on his desk before facing me again. "Jonathan, we both know what you're thinking about, and it's against the law to even attempt it."

He bowed my head. "I know, but I just–" sighing, he ran a hand through his hair.

Craig smiled, shaking his head. "remember the last time you went out there? You almost got killed."

"that's because I was a kid!" he snapped.

"alright calm down." he waved it off, sitting in his chair and opening books. "just try not to sigh too much, it gets a little distracting.

"oh, sorry."

Craig was studying, it was natural for him to since he was kind of known as the princess of their kingdom that was said to marry the prince. Jonathan is his bodyguard/best friend, they've been together ever since they were young.

But Jonathan always wanted to go see the outside for myself, to see what lay beyond the sea depths that he had come to call my home. They are merman so the ocean is all they know.

Jonathan sports a Persian blue tail with a shell shoulder armour, short brown hair and blue eyes. 
Craig had a pastel pink tail with fins attached to the sides, signifying his royal status. His hazel eyes focused intently on the words on front of him as he ran a hand through his auburn locks.

Turning away Jonathan focused on his blue tail, fingering the scales.

"sulking about it won't make it any better"

Groaning, Jonathan sat up.  "come on! No one will know, I'll be back before you know it." he protested.

"you and me both know that that won't work." Craig rolled his eyes, focusing back on his study. "and not only will you get a severe punishment, I'll also be punished since I allowed you to go."

"then come with me."

"sorry, can't do that either."

Sighing in defeat, Jonathan collapsed back down again. Ever since he was little he's always wanted to visit the outside world. That feeling has always grown over time. And he did go to the outside world, but he got caught and was punished. If Craig hadn't stepped in, things could be very different now.

Craig glanced up from his notes and meet Jonathan's dejected gaze. He looked like a cat caught out in the rain. And if it was one thing that Craig couldn't resist, it was Jonathan's sad face.

Sighing, Craig set his notes down. "alright you can go see the surface."

Jonathan's face lit up.

"but only for ten minutes."

He grumbled. "well, it's better then nothing, I guess." 

Getting up from his position, he unstrapped all his armour, letting it fall to the ground then swum to the window and looked back, "thanks Craig, your the best."

"yeah, whatever, just don't make me regret it ok?"

"yeah," Jonathan gave a smile before swimming out the window.

He slipped past the other guards, hiding behind pillars of the underwater palace. Once he reached the outskirts, he began heading upwards, he could see the sun shinning through the surface, he reached out just in time to feel like the heat if the outside world, hear the sounds of the humans and wild life.

But what happened next was unexpected.
