The Lie

The last two periods of the day for me are Spanish and PE. Luckily for me Spanish is really easy and my teacher, Mr. Spencer, is super fun and he makes it really easy to pay attention in class. He teaches so well that sometimes I am actually sad to leave his class, but today was not one of those days. When the bell rang to go to the next class I was the first one out of the class. I ran to PE so that I could be ready before anyone else.

"Listen up kiddos." Mr. Davis is the nice one of the two PE teachers, and luckily for me that's who I got. He talks with a calm voice as though he is talking to a toddler to reassure them that everything is okay. "Today is mile day. That means if you need to pee, go now. We will do our short warm-ups then it's time to run. Kaeden."

"Yes, sir?"

"I want you to lead warm-ups today. Okay?"

"Yeah sure. Okay everybody let's start with twenty jumping jacks GO GO GO!" I change into leader mod which includes me yelling and having no mercy towards anyone. "Jack! I know you can have better form." I think this is why Coach Davis picks me; well and maybe because I also am the most athletic guy in our class.

After I am able to finish all of our warm-ups I say to Coach Davis, "Alright Coach, they are all yours. Let's go do us some running."

"You heard the kid. Outside. Now. I want you to start running the track as soon as you can."

The mile gets easier every time and each time I do it, I get a better time. I am the fastest guy in our school and have put two state records as well.

After I am done, coach allows me to go get changed and just chillax for the rest of the class. He even said I could go home, but I told Emma I would meet her in the cafeteria so I am going to.

RINGGGG

Finally. I run out the doors pushing past all the other students so I can get a table in the cafeteria for Emma and I to sit at. When I get there, though, someone catches my eye. Well, actually two someone's. Its India and Emma, talking and laughing. Emma sees me and beckons me over. So I come. Walking slowly but surely. What will I say? India has always been a brat to me. I have no idea what I will do. But I guess we are about to find out.

"Hey Kaeden. How was your day?" India asks me this so sweetly, but for some reason I feel attacked.

"My day was fine. How was your guy's day?" I ask both of them so that hopefully India will go away.

"Oh my day was great I found out that India is in three of my classes which made me way less lonely than I thought I would be." Emma seems so happy but she has no idea what she is in for. India will tear her apart.

"My day was just fabulous because I met this dime. She is just so sweet. I can tell we are going to be besties." Her twangy accent is so annoying. I have no idea how Emma can stand her. Ugh why won't she just go away. "Oh well it looks like my bus is here so I'd better skedaddle on out of here. Bye Emma. Kaeden." She hugs Emma and smiles at me before running out to her car, not bus.

"Well, um looks like she lied about riding a bus." Emma says laughing. She is so innocent; I will die if she continues staying with India. She will turn Emma into a bitch like herself.

"Yeah she lies about little things lie that a lot."

"Wait, I thought you didn't know her that well?" Crap. I forgot that I told her I didn't know India.

"Yeah, well I mean, I have gone to school with her my whole life but we haven't really talked a whole bunch because she was mean to me in third grade and it kind of made me not like her anymore." I hope Emma forgives me for lying. I don't want to have a reputation of being a liar.

"Well considering that you lied to me, you don't seem all that different. But I think I can let one little lie slip. But only this once okay Kaeden? I really want us to be great friends. So no more lying? All truths. All the time. Can you agree to that?" Oh good. She is willing to give me a second chance.

"Yes I promise. I won't lie to you ever again. I want us to stay friends as well." I say this with a smile at the end to look promising. I mean I am promising that to her I would not want to hurt her.

"Okay. So what do you usually do after school?" She asks this and her face looks completely genuine; almost like she actually cares.

"I usually just go home and do homework that hasn't been handed out yet ha-ha. What did you used to do after school?" After I ask this, her face looks sad.

"Well...um...I'd rather not talk about it. But I guess I shouldn't interrupt with your usual schedule." She goes to turn away and leave, but I hurry and grab her hand saying, "No. Please don't go." Before I can stop myself. She looks down at our touching hands and I realize she has grabbed back.

"You know; you don't have to be so nice to me. Just because I'm new and all."

"Emma I'm not just doing it to be nice. I am doing it because I really want to be your friend. And not just one of the many you will make, but one of importance." She looks happy when I say that.

"Wait... like you mean that?"

"Yes. Ever since I laid my eyes on you, I wanted to be your friend, and when I realized you were alone and looked confused, I figured that was my chance to become your friend."

"I'm glad you came up and talked to me Kaeden." She gives my hand a firm squeeze, then let's go and tucks her hair behind her ear.

"Hey I was just wondering if you are busy two Saturdays from now?" Is this subtle enough? I hope so.

"Hmm so like the sixth of May? Um yeah I think so. Why?" Yes, she doesn't know what I intend to do.

"Oh I was just wondering. You will figure it out later." I say this and I hope I don't sound sketchy. She just smiles and gives a shake of her head, which makes her hair fall back in her face. Man she is so cute.

BZZZZZ I hear a buzz and she looks down at her phone. "Oh my grandma is here. I've gotta go. Bye Kaeden." She hugs me then runs out to the front of the school.

"Bye Emma." I whisper to her as I watch her leave.

Now that I know she is free on Prom night. It's time for me to create a cute way to ask her.
