My first thought when I come back into consciousness is that Harry isn’t with me. As I open my eyes, I realize that I am lying on a hospital bed in a different room. The bed is still made and no sheets cover me, so I must not have been here long. 3:30 AM, the red numbers show on the digital clock beside me. The sharp pain in my head has subsided, but a dull ache still occupies the back of my skull. As murmurs make their way to me from across the room, I turn my head to see the doctor and Yerza conversing by the door, their backs to me.

“She’s been through a lot,” Yerza whispers.

“She may be exhausted, but this isn’t completely stress-induced. There must be something else that caused her to faint,” the doctor responds insistently.

“I’ve got a feeling it’s…” Yerza’s voice grows softer. I raise my head slightly, struggling to make out her words, but I don’t hear the rest of her sentence. They both turn around to look at me at the same time, and looks of surprise appear on their faces when they notice I’m awake.

“I’ll go talk to her,” Yerza whispers, gesturing for the doctor to leave. With a short nod directed towards me, the doctor walks out the door.

As Yerza approaches my bedside, I grow more anxious. “How’s Harry?” I ask urgently.

“He’s resting now, Jenny. It’s you that I need to help right now.”

“I’m fine,” I say sharply. “I just need to know how Harry is doing.” A piercing jab of pain returns and I clench my teeth, pressing my fingers to my temples. Slowly, I lower my hand, aware that Yerza is watching me worriedly. “I’m fine,” I repeat in a shaky voice.

Yerza stares at me for a moment before she finally responds. “You aren’t going to be able to help him in the state you are in right now, Jenny. I need you to answer some questions. This will be as important to you as it will be to Harry. Trust me.”

I can tell she really does want to help me, and a part of me yearns for someone to stop the pain. I nod and sit up cautiously, avoiding too much movement.

Yerza pulls up a chair beside my bed and sits down, observing me carefully. “Have these headaches been occurring often lately?”

I try to think back to the weeks leading up to now, but this only leads me to remember what happened last night. I shut the nightmares of yesterday out of my mind. “I think so,” I say quietly, “but they weren’t this bad.”

“What about cramps or fatigue?” Yerza asks gently.

“Yes,” I say after a long pause. “What’s wrong with me?” I whisper, suddenly afraid after Yerza remains silent.

Her lips are set in a firm line, thinking carefully of how she will phrase her next question. “Have you had your period this month?”

I suddenly realize what she’s trying to determine and my hand flies to my stomach. “No,” I whisper, shaking my head slowly.

Yerza stands up and walks over to the opposite wall of the room, opening a cupboard and pulling out a small box. Wordlessly, she offers it to me.

With trembling hands, I reach out to take the box with the realization that more than one life could be depending on me at this moment.
