Gambling houses are successful because they know that humans will keep coming back to recoup their losses. Someone who was on a winning streak and then suddenly began to lose, would want to try again and again to get back to where they had been. If most gamblers stopped while they were ahead, casinos would be far less profitable. But sometimes it is wise to stop while you are ahead, rather than continuing to take a big risk, or in a worst-case scenario, cut your losses if you're losing, and quit before you lose more.
