"hari!" jacob tried to mop up some of the paint that she had spilled. "i can't fix this."
"yeah, yeah. just start another one." she tore a clean sheet of butcher paper, set it down, and balled up the old poster.
shaking his head, jacob carefully sketched out the letters onto the blank, white sheet.
"i can't believe my baby is asking someone out," hari said, smiling. she leaned over and ruffled the top of his head, causing him to break the point of his pencil.
"i'm not asking him out," he protested, brushing her hand away, almost knocking it into the open paint can. "don't spill the paint again! and it's not even as my date. just as friends."
"that's what you say," hari sang, swirling her paintbrush across the paper.

"are you sure this is fine?" troye smoothed the edges of his poster.
"of course. when are you getting flowers?" emma pulled his hands off of the paper.
"mum's getting them for me before school tomorrow." his nervous smile faltered. troye chewed his lower lip.
"don't be nervous, troye," emma said, watching her friend twist his hands in his lap. "i'll be right there with you."
"watching me get rejected."
"pssh, it's practically a rule that you have to say yes."
troye tried for a real smile, but his insides still twisted relentlessly.
