"now that we have ice cream--" the doorbell chimed as they walked out of the store. hari pointed her cone at jacob. "we have more important matters to discuss."
"okay."
"first of all, how do you feel when i tell you that i'm moving in tomorrow? your mom just signed the adoption papers."
jacob gently shoved her.
"hey! watch the cone," she said, trying to glare at him without similing.
he rolled his eyes, sitting. "i thought we had important matters to discuss."
she crossed her legs and leaned back on the bench. "so jake. what're you going to do about troye?"
his face fell. "what can i do?"
"whatever you need to do to stop feeling sorry for yourself."
he studied his ice cream cone.
"come on, jake. you're going to have to face it sometime."
"but i can't, hari. i don't want to think about it."
"why not?"
"there wasn't a moment when i didn't want to smack both of them. just to stop it." he exhaled sharply. "i wanted so badly for him to be with me."
"i think we both did." hari crunched a piece of her cone.
"and i know this sounds selfish, but i don't care, because i'm a selfish person."
"jacob."
"it should have been me, hari. i wish i didn't even come because it just made me even more miserable. but it should have been me."
