"jacob, stop messing with your collar." hari pursed her lips.

"but it's uncomfortable." jacob scrunched his nose.

"real men don't complain." ignoring her, he reached up to tug at the fabric again.

"ouch! what was that for?" hari had slapped his hand away from his neck.

"stop it!"

"that's it. i'm leaving." hari scoffed. "for real."

"jake, i'd believe you if i didn't know you so well."

"and why wouldn't i leave?"

"you just want to see troye all dressed up." jacob didn't respond. from the red staining his cheeks, hari didn't need an answer to know she was right.

-

troye walked next to kayla, matching his steps to hers. she looked pretty today, the setting sun on the horizon casting a warm glow on her skin. her hair seemed to be woven with strands of sunlight. but was she really that much prettier than any other girl?

why did i ask her? i mean, she's nice and all, but does it really mean that much to me? was i really happy when she said yes?

"you okay?" kayla asked, noticing the slight frown on his face.

"yeah. i'm great." the edges of her mouth softened into a smile. the back of her hand grazed his.

does she want me to hold her hand? do i have to hold her hand?

he continued on, walking stiffly by her side. he snuck a glance to his side.

was kayla really that pretty?  he stopped himself. was any girl really that pretty?

if he looked at it objectively, kayla was a pretty average looking person. maybe slightly above average if he looked at girls, but still average. his thoughts wandered as he thought about people at his school and girls and boys and...

...jacob.

-

jacob stumbled forward as hari pulled his arm.

"hurry up!"

"what?"

hari shook her head. jacob pointed at his ears; the music was blaring and he could barely hear himself think.

"we gotta station ourselves strategically," hari yelled in his ear.

"i have no idea what you're saying." he kept at hari's side until she stopped by the bleachers.

"since you're tall, and you can see the door, i want you to tell me when troye comes." hari's eyes were fixed on the door. she bounced on the balls of her feet. "and i know you heard me. your eyes lit up when you heard his name."

-

no, don't think about jacob.

but he wanted to.

but i shouldn't.

but nothing was stopping him.

but what about kayla?

but she wouldn't know.

but i asked her.

but he didn't care.
